What we're looking for is user info on their AR model, barrel, barrel twist and the best ammo accuracy wise for that setup. If you have a problem with a certain ammo you can add that but please no rants in this particular thread.

As to the powder it's probably another "secret" blend for Hornady alone.

I have an AR-15 Bushmaster, 24", 1:9 twist and I would like some info (or guidelines) on a start point for powder wt. and bullet wt. for reloading ammo. The powders I have are Varget, IMR 4064, and IMR 4320. I have 60gr, 55gr, and 40gr bullets.

Thanks so much,

Ron

Hornady is not limited to one vendor for components, therefore they use best propellant for each individual application is used. In keeping with Hornady standards of performance, propellants are selected based on performance alone. The same goes for the primers. The Tap rounds very depending on what your wanting to do. Such as barier penatration for fragmentation.

Hope that helps .

Some 1=9" twists will hold the 68-69 grain bullets, but some will not. I think that is because they are actually closer 1-10. 1-8 or 1-7 is what you need for the heavier bullets.

I think I shot the same ammo with the same results, hopefully 68-69gr will work better.

I'll contribute some data, particularly for those that are concerned that a 1:7 barrel will 'overstabilize' light bullets.

My Noveske 16.1" Recon Stainless barrel will shoot 3-shot groups under 0.7" (or better) @ 100 yards for 40-grain Nosler BT (3450 fps), 50-grain Sierra Blitzking, 60-grain Sierra Varminter, 75-grain Hornady Match. These are the only bullets I have loaded for to date, but every one of them will group.

Never thought I'd use "1:7" and "prairie dog loads" in the same context, but now I'm a believer.

The load that works best in my Colt 1:9 twist
primer: remington 7 1/2 benchrest
powder: Hodgdon Blc2 26 gr
buller: winchester 64gr PSP
brass: LC or Rem
When my rifle was new it would shoot 1/2moa if I did my part. 10k+ rounds later its grown to near 3/4".

First, welcome to the Armory!

To define a 'good round' depends on your purposed for this barrel. Varmint shooting? Punching paper up to 300 yards? Defense? For the latter two, the Hornady 75-grain TAP is very accurate and effective out of shorter barrels.
