I would like to swap the bobbed hammer and hammer spring (short) for a spurred hammer and spring (long) in my 1066. My 1006,1086,4566 all have long hammer springs, it would be nice to have the same spring in the 1066. Is there a reason for the short spring in the 1066? If not what parts do I need to make the change? Don

To all,

I am new to this site and I realize that this is an older post but one that I have great interest.

Can anyone comment as to Don's question below about changing a bobbed 10XX S&W by changing hammer and/or the hammer spring?

I have a 1066 and would love to effectively replace the bobbed hammer with the spurred hammer, similar to what is on the 1006.

Additonally, what needs to be purchase and where does one get these items? I suspect that one needs to go directly to S&W but I truely am ignorant!

If this old news can anyone point me to where I may find more information.

Many thanks in advance,

SSS

Did it, used 1006 hamer and spring and strut. It now workes like its longer brother or sister or what ever they are to each other and the 1086 and the 1076. evil.gif Don

Great informational site gentlemen. I have a similar dilemma, just opposite of this one. My 1006 with hotter loads causes hammer bite due to my grip hold. I recently acquired a 1066 bobbed hammer I would like to install. Is this even feasible, and if it is, would this be an easy swap, or something I should hand over to my gunsmith? Thank you for any help on this.

All (current) S&W hammers are laser engraved with the model number or numbers for the models they will fit. You should not have a problem with 1066 hammer in 1006 because both guns utilize the same hammer drop/ safety system/slide safety lever. I would be careful using a 1076 hammer that utilizes a decock lever drop system, as thay hammer may not work. As a precaution, I would just ring S&W and you should be given the proper information you request as far as which hammers will work.

As far as difficulty, any S&W auto armorer should have no problem switching hammers, but make sure everything functions as it should, after installation. If you have no one around, send the lower (frame) half of your gun to S&W and they will do it for you for a fee. If you send the whole gun, you will pay overnight shipping charges if you us UPS.
