So I am getting gas the other day on my way down to ATL. I get the pump started and run into the store to get a Dew for the road. I come back out open the drivers door and put the drink in the cup holder. While I have the door open and my head in the car I hear "hey buddy can you help me out" It voice was not loud so I knew it was close, I look up at the same time I put my hand on my pistol out of caution. Gas station has had some drug events in the past so I was being carefull. I look up over the door and dont see anybody close enough to have made the statment and turn around towards to tailgate to see a guy standing between me and the pump. The fact that he got that close tells me that I was not quite as aware of my surrounds as I thought I was, lessonn learned. I turned my body so that my pistol was in the corner of the door but I could still draw if things went south. I look him in the eye and realize he is standing there 2 feet from an operating gas pump with a lit cigarette hanging out of his mouth. My first words were "hey dude I am pumping gas here and you are smoking a cigarette what the hell are you trying to do." He stepped off and put the cigarette out. Ends up he just had a flat tire and a short tire tool and could not break the tourqe on the lugnuts.
Lessons learned:
1. Look around constantly. Dont just move your head, but make note of what is happeneing, where it is happeneing, and how fast it can get to you.
2. Even though sombody may not be trying to endanger you life, they may be doing it any way.
3. Never under estimate the things people will do with out thinking of how dangerous it is. It could effect more than just them.
i'll add a forth. 99.9 % of the time they have children too
definitely makes you wonder though.
