OK... sure... except I have shot many .223 loads that were upwards of 3,300fps, including Black Hills, Federal American Eagle, some DRS gunshow reloads, and even some of my own loads. They all use .223 brass. Its usually the heavier weights, like 69gr-77gr, that are sub-3,000fps.

Eh, I don't care if the bullet is flying at 2,800 or 3,200... if I hit you, you're toast. I still say you can't really feel a difference in recoil between 2,800 and 3,200fps from an AR-15. Maybe in something without a recoil system. Someone needs to do a blind taste test some time. I bet the results would be surprising.

Sounds a lot like the fabled motorcyclist's "butt-dyno" that swears one can tell how many hp they got from that slip-on exhaust! laugh.gif

Nevermind.

Stockpiled the surplus battle packs but those are saved for SHTF.
My SPR only gets Black Hills 75gr.
The others get feed what ever. Even Wolf.

Nova, if you're getting 3,300 from .223 that's fine. Is it factory or reloads? What length barrel? I know 75 and 77 grain bullets actually fragment at lower velocities and longer range(s) than 55gr ammo.

IIRC, the 50gr, 52gr, and 55gr Black Hills loads are around 3250fps...same thing with Federal American Eagle. My own loads are in the low 3,000s with 55gr sp bullets. I don't typically go out and dig in the berm to see if the stuff has fragmented in the dirt, and since I don't shoot people its really not an issue for me. I do know for sure that the .223 bullets I shoot pretty much disintegrate shooting steel, so that's enough for me. This is out of my 16" RRA.

FWIW, I was talking to my Dad about .223 ammo he used to shoot decades ago and he said that it was a couple of hundred fps slower than the stuff he's seeing nowadays. Times change I guess.

Actually... I've been shooting more .22 than anything followed by 9mm... then .223 is a distant 3rd and .308 an even more distant 4th.

The velocities of factory ammunition as listed on the box is typically out of a .223 bolt gun, either 20" or 24". 5.56 is loaded to be between 130 and 200 fps faster than .223. I'm with you guys who shoot .223 and hoard 5.56. I wish I had a .22lr or 9mm dedicated AR.

Yeah a 9mm AR buikld is looking better and better, I think .22lr is a little too hard to get to function reliably to be worth the trouble.

Plus I can shoot the 9mm AR on the pistol steel line at my range :)

I'm surprised it took this long for people to realize the $400 piston conversion works as well as the $12 gas tube it replaced.
