G21 vs G20

I posted (probably wrong) to another area and got not replies, so I thought I'd try here

I'm New to this forum and new to the 10MM, but I'm already hooked on the site! Sooooo much great information! and I love the caliber and my new gun.

I recently purchased (and customized) a G29 with a polished the barrel and ramps, a SS guide rod, 3.5# connector, finger extensions on 3 high capacity mags, grip extension on one G20 Hi-Cap mag, Crimson Trace and night sights, carry in a IWB leather holster.

Here's the question;
I'm hooked on the 10mm thumb.gif and now I want the long-slide con-version from LWD (G20?21).

I'm wondering about picking up a G21 and then adding the new Long Slide conversion, components and barrel from LWD to convert it to 10mm.

I also have a G30 (that I used as my EDC before getting my G29), I'm thinking (I know dangerous that if I picked up the G21 vs a G20, I would still have it available in 45ACP (by switching slides and barrel, to compliment my G30 when and IF the need arises.

I'm also considering (eventually) to add the LWD barrels in the .357Sig and/or 9x25 and the .40SW for both the G29 and the Long Slide conversion.

I noticed that one member did this and as I have to get one or the other G20?21 I wondered if any of you had any thoughts or advice?

Thanks,

SR

Winchester silver tips in 10mm

I just purchased my first box of winchester 175 grn silver tips for my 10mm and ran then though my chrony. Out of my full size witness with 4.5" barrel they ranged from 1160 to 1195 fps. Three 5 shot groups tested. According to their website they should average 1290 fps out of a 5.5" barrel.

I'm well aware of the additional velocity that the extra barrel will give but I do find it a bit underhanded that they advertise velocities out of a 5.5" barrel. When is the last 10mm you found with a 5.5" barrel? So basicly they are posting velocities for 6" barrels. I would love to have a 10mm with a longslide 6 inch barrel config but the average 10 out there has a 4.5 or 5 inch barrel.

For reference, I regularly load 180 grs with 11 grains of blue dot out of my Witness's 4.5" barrel at 1275 to 1300 fps, so i my opinion the shooters buying winchester ST are getting short changed if they feel they are getting full power 10mm rounds.

Just my opinion on the matter, any replies welcome.

Jesse

I spoke with Blaine at Vltor today.

The Vltor "Bren Ten" is on its way! It will be seen at the 2010 S.H.O.T. show as advertised. Blaine hopes that the pistol will be hitting the market in January; certainly the pistol will be shipping by March 2010. The production will be 50/50 (half in 10mm Auto, half in .45 ACP.)

I told him that this Forum has the ears if the "10mm faithful"; we are the primary market for the pistol (Blaine knows this and was advised that informing those on this forum should be the first to know.)

Scott

310 Night Guard Range Report

I picked up my 310NG about two weeks ago and have had some eventful sessions at the range that I thought I would share.

Before even firing the gun, I removed the IL flag and added an extended firing pin. During this week I dry fired the gun several hundered times each night. I plan on keeping this as a night stand gun so I plan on keeping it stoked with 40s with 10mm in back up moon clips.

First time at the range was a good break-in, shooting 90 rounds of 40 caliber FMJ. I experienced a few jackets shaving on the 10mm ledge but no leading in the barrel. I also experienced a few times when the cylinder would not rotate. I attributed this to the shavings getting caught in the cylinder gap (it wasn't). Accuracy was not great and I discovered that both screws in the rear sight had become loose. Recoil was not bad but the grips did not dampen the recoil and my hand was sore after 90 rounds.

Second time at the range was when the fun started. I put another 100 rounds down range and experienced a locked cylinder with every moonclip. Turns out that the extended firing pin was sticking in the fired primer and not retracting properly. Accuracy was much improved with the addition of thread locker to the screws. After this session, I took the gun home and put the factory firing pin back in.

Third time at the range I put 200 rounds down range and sent 100 rounds down range with good success. Then the main spring screw backed out and the light strikes started and I had every other round failing to get a good primer strike. I also had not put enough thread lock on my rear sight screws so they started to come loose. So the last 100 rounds consisted of taking off the grips after every few clips and tightening the main spring screw and then tightening the sight screws. I experimented with the main sping and with even 1 half turn of the screw, I would experience light strikes. Fully tightened, I get 100 percent reliability.

Last night I cleaned the gun and then added liberal amounts of thread lock to each screw only to find at the end that the ejector rod had come loose. I usually test the ejector by hand tightening the rod and this was the first time it had come loose.

Regarding the extended firing pins, I have them in my 357 and 45 N frames and had never experienced the pin getting caught in the primer. I suppose the solution to light stikes with factory pin is to either make sure the main spring screw is fully tightened or futz with the extended firing pin until the main spring is backed out for lighter strikes.

My solution? I'll stick with the factory pin for the 310 and thread lock everything I can . . .

-R

A used but very seldom shot Colt Delta Elite is now mine. Blue finish and totally stock . It was part of an estate and turned into Scheels where I bought it. $650 Really nice . I can hardly wait to shoot it . I was disatisfied with my Glock 20 and 24 completely. The trigger never was any good and long range accuracy ( 200 yards ) was not up to standards. The Delta Elite is perfect in the hand with a nice trigger. Out in the desert will let me know how it shoots. Will advise. high plains drifter

Will Vltor's Bren Ten realize D&D's design goals?

When Dornaus & Dixon designed the Bren Ten with Jeff Cooper's input, their aim was to market a highly accurate, extremely reliable combat arm with all necessary "custom" features right out of the box. Among Jeff Cooper's requirements were:

1. the pistol must be de-horned.
2. have rugged fully adjustable sights.
3. have a self contained tool kit for sight adjustment and basic maintenance.
4. have a lanyard ring.
5. have an adjustable magazine drop.
6. have the ability to be carried "cocked & locked".
7. be chambered in the .40 special (10mm).
8. be capable of target impact velocities with a 200 grain bullet of 1,000 fps.
9. have a loaded chamber indicator which can be verified visually and by feel.
10. must be very accurate.
11. have a reversible (not ambidextrous) thumb safety.
11. most importantly, have a 99.9% reliability rating.

When properly executed, the original Bren Ten achieved these goals. The operative words here are "properly executed". Assembly issues at start-up along with substandard outsourced components such as slide & frame investment castings and the original MEC-GAR dual caliber magazines had quality all over the map. Later manufactured guns with the 2nd generation 10mm magazines were on the mark however. Even Eric Kincel made the following comment regarding the Bren Ten's accuracy in his Gun World feature article on the Peregrine Falcon:

"Dornaus and Dixon advertised that all production Bren Tens would produce a ten-shot group less than one-inch at twenty-five yards, while that auto was in production. From my own experience, I know this to be true. The use of Power-Seal rifling in the Falcon should make it highly accurate."

Apparently, Vltor has deemed that items number 3 and 5 are arguably extraneous and have been dropped. Their decision to use Witness magazine components in their magazine assemblies has left some people scratching their heads also. That said, do you feel that Vltor, with 2010, not 1984 technology available, will be able to maintain the accuracy, reliability and other general design requirements of the original?

Bruce

The holster was an easy on and off situation. But now I was thinking of trying a sholder rig. I see them ALOT in films and TV (Miami Vice) But I wanted some opinions and some people who have used them. DO you like them or are they a pain. I want to get one for the 1006. I was looking at Galco Classic Light. I was also looking at the Safari Land rigs. What are your opinions

THANKS
Scott

Hello all well after waiting for a week or so I finally got my 1006. GOOD LORD its a boat anchor. But Damn I love it. I cannot wait to go shoot it. I am not sure how old it is it has a start on the serial as TEVXXXX. This is the first gun I have had with a 5in Barrel. Nothing about this thing is tiny. I changed out the Hogue Grips for a set of NEW factory. I have a Bianchi S3 holster with it that fits like a glove. You may think I am crazy but I want to use it as a CCW. Anyone else out there that can share some best practices of the 1006 I would be greatfull. Glad I fond this site, have a good week all of you

Scott

***SPF*** Colt Delta Elite, original production, customized

I have a Custom Delta Elite for sale and have listed it on gunbroker.com at the url below.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=144491986

I have it listed there for $1175 plus shipping as a starting price. If anyone here is interested I'll end the auction and sell it here for $1175 shipped. The base gun is a pre-enhanced stainless Colt Delta Elite. I have at least $500 in parts and $700 in work in the gun in addition to the price of the gun itself. All parts are Ed Brown I believe with the exception of the recoil spring and guide rod, Grieder slide stop and Caspian plunger tube. The work was done here in Vermont by Piper Custom. The barrel is the original Colt barrel fitted and given a 11 degree crown. The grips are custom grips which started life as G10 Spyro Gyro grips. The grips were around $100 or more. The sights are Heine Straight Eight night sights. The slide to frame fit is very snug and the trigger is nice and crisp.

I hate to sell the gun but the exigencies of life demand it. If you have any questions please feel free to email me. I have 100% A+ ratings on gunbroker, and Ebay. I've bought and sold extensively on the Smith Wesson forum and the SIGform and have a good reputation in both places by the name SIGWolf.

If you would like additional picture of any part of the gun, please let me know.

New Dan Wesson Pointman Question

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum. I just joined after ordering my first 10mm yesterday. I placed an order for a Dan Wesson Pointman 10mm with the Desert Tan Teflon coating. I was wondering if anyone knows any of the details of this coating...if it's regular Teflon or if it's one of the various mixtures that are popular in the market. My concern is durability against corrosion. I live here in hot, sweaty Florida and plan to carry this bad boy. When I called DW support, I could only get voicemail boxes and even got disconnected because of a full mailbox. So, I called CZ USA and selected the option to speak to a gunsmith or someone about technical issues. When I asked him if he had details of this Teflon coating, he didn't seem too informed. He said that they don't do it in-house and send it out to be done. I asked him how it compared to Cerakote and the likes and he just said that the Teflon is as good as anything out there, but didn't provide any details. This almost sounded like a salesman's response from someone I had hoped would provide a bit more technical detail. I know a number of people rave about the DW 1911's and I'm looking forward to getting mine. If anyone has any input regarding these specific coats (not the Certakote on the Valor, since it is a different coating). Thanks in advance!

I want to know what is a good holster to carry it in. I live in the warmer weather most of the year. Maybe a outside the waist holster. Maybe a IWB holster. (that is how I carried my Kimber.) But I am also looking at a shoulder holster. I usually wear shorts or trousers with a tee-shirt and a Hawaiian shirt worn on the outside untucked and open. THe 10mm round seems darn impressive, but I dont want to get a gun I cant shoot due to ammo availability. The Delta Elite looks like one sweet handgun. Thanks for info.

This is my first time posting; so I hope the addition of a new member will help a little, given the commentary re: postings.
I am in the process of breaking in my DW RZ-10 Sportsman with Remington FMJs (light loads), and had at least 5 failures to feed in the first 100 rounds. I am hoping tht things will imporove, but when I had similar problems with my Kimber (in 045), I had to get the barrel re-throated and the ramp re-polished. Ofcourse the DW has the ramp integral to the barrel, so its somewhat different.
Has anyone had similar problems with either the RZ-10 S or a regular razorback? Otherwise the gun shoots great and is pretty accurate.

Glock 20SF Reddot experiences?!?

OK, I bought my first Glock - a 20SF - and I am loving it. Started with a Glock 4.5# disconnector and extended slide stop. Installed Dawson Precision Adj rer and .300 x .100 front - both fiber optic. Gun shot low, so switch to a .285 to bring the groups up.

Storm Lake barrel arrived - 5.3" with 2 comp ports in the extended length. 180 bonded Double Tap and 200 Controlled Exp Double Tap shoot way low with the comp. At 10 yards, where I am spot on with the Dawsons, I am 4" low now with the comp'd barrel.

Do I try a Dawson front sight that is even lower - i.e., meant for a fixed rear. How about the Novak adjustables?? Anybody do a JP reddot or Doctor or Triji RMR on their Glock 20 and can share pics and experiences??

I need some advice from the pros...

I'll be hunting with my 2nd Gen. G20 with 20# spring and a Lone Wolf 6" barrel. Im thinking of using a 200grn Hardcast WFN Beartooth slug with 10 gns of 800x, new brass, and CCI 350 primers at 1.26"COL...Should yield around 1300fps.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever used similar setup on a large buck or +-200# hog...
