Shoulder Rigs...Yes or No

Ok Just yesterday I picked up my 1006. I carried it all day today in a Bianchi S3 Pocket pistol. ITs was not as bad as I thought. The holster was an easy on and off situation. But now I was thinking of trying a sholder rig. I see them ALOT in films and TV (Miami Vice) But I wanted some opinions and some people who have used them. DO you like them or are they a pain. I want to get one for the 1006. I was looking at Galco Classic Light. I was also looking at the Safari Land rigs. What are your opinions

THANKS
Scott

Hello all well after waiting for a week or so I finally got my 1006. GOOD LORD its a boat anchor. But Damn I love it. I cannot wait to go shoot it. I am not sure how old it is it has a start on the serial as TEVXXXX. This is the first gun I have had with a 5in Barrel. Nothing about this thing is tiny. I changed out the Hogue Grips for a set of NEW factory. I have a Bianchi S3 holster with it that fits like a glove. You may think I am crazy but I want to use it as a CCW. Anyone else out there that can share some best practices of the 1006 I would be greatfull. Glad I fond this site, have a good week all of you

Scott

***SPF*** Colt Delta Elite, original production, customized

I have a Custom Delta Elite for sale and have listed it on gunbroker.com at the url below.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=144491986

I have it listed there for $1175 plus shipping as a starting price. If anyone here is interested I'll end the auction and sell it here for $1175 shipped. The base gun is a pre-enhanced stainless Colt Delta Elite. I have at least $500 in parts and $700 in work in the gun in addition to the price of the gun itself. All parts are Ed Brown I believe with the exception of the recoil spring and guide rod, Grieder slide stop and Caspian plunger tube. The work was done here in Vermont by Piper Custom. The barrel is the original Colt barrel fitted and given a 11 degree crown. The grips are custom grips which started life as G10 Spyro Gyro grips. The grips were around $100 or more. The sights are Heine Straight Eight night sights. The slide to frame fit is very snug and the trigger is nice and crisp.

I hate to sell the gun but the exigencies of life demand it. If you have any questions please feel free to email me. I have 100% A+ ratings on gunbroker, and Ebay. I've bought and sold extensively on the Smith Wesson forum and the SIGform and have a good reputation in both places by the name SIGWolf.

If you would like additional picture of any part of the gun, please let me know.

New Dan Wesson Pointman Question

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum. I just joined after ordering my first 10mm yesterday. I placed an order for a Dan Wesson Pointman 10mm with the Desert Tan Teflon coating. I was wondering if anyone knows any of the details of this coating...if it's regular Teflon or if it's one of the various mixtures that are popular in the market. My concern is durability against corrosion. I live here in hot, sweaty Florida and plan to carry this bad boy. When I called DW support, I could only get voicemail boxes and even got disconnected because of a full mailbox. So, I called CZ USA and selected the option to speak to a gunsmith or someone about technical issues. When I asked him if he had details of this Teflon coating, he didn't seem too informed. He said that they don't do it in-house and send it out to be done. I asked him how it compared to Cerakote and the likes and he just said that the Teflon is as good as anything out there, but didn't provide any details. This almost sounded like a salesman's response from someone I had hoped would provide a bit more technical detail. I know a number of people rave about the DW 1911's and I'm looking forward to getting mine. If anyone has any input regarding these specific coats (not the Certakote on the Valor, since it is a different coating). Thanks in advance!

Well I decided to help out the family some and sell my Kimber collection and use that money for bills. WOE IS ME!!! But I took some of that money and bought a SW1006. I want to know what is a good holster to carry it in. I live in the warmer weather most of the year. Maybe a outside the waist holster. Maybe a IWB holster. (that is how I carried my Kimber.) But I am also looking at a shoulder holster. I usually wear shorts or trousers with a tee-shirt and a Hawaiian shirt worn on the outside untucked and open. What do al of you fellow 10mm fans think.

Please give me some ideas and some brands that fit them THANKS
Scott Rouse

How to change SW1006 Grips HELP

I need some help.....I have my eye on the SW 1006. I have never owned a 10mm before but am chomping at the bit to get one.

My question is some what simple I hope. The Pistol I am looking to buy has a Hogue rubber grip installed on it. I want to replace it with the straight SW grip with out the hump on the back of the grip. I want it more to a 1911 grip angle.

Anyway is it hard to change out the grips? I cant seem to tell how they are attached to the pistol. Can anyone help me?

Thanks
Scott Rouse

Question about 10MM

This might belong in the ammo category, but..... I had seriously considered getting me a 10mm, but I was wondering what the reality of finding ammo is? I know alot of you guys reload, but for the non-reloader...is this ammo a PITA to find? Ive gone to a couple of online ammo sites, but they have nothing. THe 10mm round seems darn impressive, but I dont want to get a gun I cant shoot due to ammo availability. The Delta Elite looks like one sweet handgun. Thanks for info.

This is my first time posting; so I hope the addition of a new member will help a little, given the commentary re: postings.
I am in the process of breaking in my DW RZ-10 Sportsman with Remington FMJs (light loads), and had at least 5 failures to feed in the first 100 rounds. I am hoping tht things will imporove, but when I had similar problems with my Kimber (in 045), I had to get the barrel re-throated and the ramp re-polished. Ofcourse the DW has the ramp integral to the barrel, so its somewhat different.
Has anyone had similar problems with either the RZ-10 S or a regular razorback? Otherwise the gun shoots great and is pretty accurate.

Installed Dawson Precision Adj rer and .300 x .100 front - both fiber optic. Gun shot low, so switch to a .285 to bring the groups up.

Storm Lake barrel arrived - 5.3" with 2 comp ports in the extended length. 180 bonded Double Tap and 200 Controlled Exp Double Tap shoot way low with the comp. At 10 yards, where I am spot on with the Dawsons, I am 4" low now with the comp'd barrel.

Do I try a Dawson front sight that is even lower - i.e., meant for a fixed rear.
Glock 20: An unusual case with the Guide Rod and Spring

I admit that I have limited time behind Glocks, but I have never quite had this problem before with the two other models I've experience with.

Observations:

If the guide rod is not inserted in exactly the right position, then the spring will fold out as the slide goes back, causing an aweful scraping and clicking noise, eventually leading to the dislocation of the captured spring unit.

Mind you, I seat the rod properly between the slide and the barrel cuff, but it would seem that the "ripples" in the spring snag the slide retention system and pop out the peice.

Am I looking at an old model/ bad spring or is this something else?

Designing a 10mm Mag hardcast heavyweight

I am wanting to take my 10mm Magnum on some hunting trips, starting out with a deer. Now of course most of the regular fodder would be more than capable of handling this tasks, but I figure why not design something heavy for the magnum users. I am aware of the 230 hardcast from double tap, the only problem being there it was designed for autos and the price of them. The nose is fairly short (~.260"), meplat is fairly wide (looking at 78% from what I could measure), crimp groove looks to be a .055" long. So starting there, I figure I can lengthen out the nose and maybe narrow up the meplat to 75% and I'll probably ditch the gas check. I think the 230 grn weight is fine and probably wont need heavier, but I need to do more digging.

Thinking something along the lines of:

.350" nose
.055" crimp groove, or maybe a short .045"
75% meplat (.300" wide)
3 body bands, 2 lube grooves. Lube grooves are 55 degrees to get more grease in. Groove to band ratio set to 1.1
Front band is set to .070"
Tangential Ogive profile

This leaves .377" of the bullet in the case, the rest in front. Total length is .729, or .002 over what the double tap hardcast measures in at.

Has anyone else went down this road and had a custom mold cut? Any thoughts or suggestions?

High pressure signs and question.

Hello all, I'm new to the forum, have been reading it for some time and finally registered. Am having problems with a new 10MM auto I just purchased, and have a pressure problem that I hope you all can help me with. To begin with the pistol I'm having a problem with is a 70 series Model 1911, 6" barrel. I have two other 1911s both 10MM, one Dan Wesson 4.25" the other a Kimber Eclipse 5". I've been reloading for both of these pistols and have never run into the problem I am having with the new one -bulging brass just above the case head. The components I am using are: Starline brass (new or 1-2 times fired), Hornady 180 grain XTPs, CCI large pistol primers, Blue Dot powder. Following Hornady reloading manual (7th edition) data. Their starting load is 7.5 grains max is 10.7. I followed their data to the letter, 1.260 OAL, crimp just enough to return the case to pre-bell dimension, starting low and working my way up etc. I weigh each load on two scales, a 505 and a digital.
I start seeing high pressure signs around 10 grains. At 10.2 grains I start seeing bulging case wall right where the ramp meets the case wall. At this point I'm still a full half grain under max. The primers are a little flattened and cratered, but not extreme. I was suspecting that the ramp was polished down too much and wasn't fully supporting the case wall, so I did some comparisons to my other pistol barrels, all ramped barrels.
Here is what I've done to try and figure out what's causing this problem ;
I cut a 10MM case length wise. Measured from the bottom of the case to the top of the webbing. The dimension I came up with is .1815. Disassembled my 3 10MM pistols, Kimber, DW, and brand x (the problem child). I inserted a 10 MM case in each and marked the point where the ramp meets the case wall, then measured from the bottom of the case to the mark I made on the case wall. Measurements are as follows: Kimber .1550, DW .1870, brand x .2135. Subtracting the thickness of the case head (.1815) from each I deduced this: the Kimber leaves none of the case wall unsupported, in fact it supports 0.0265 of the case web. The DW leaves 0.0055 of the case wall unsupported. Brand x leaves 0.032 of the case wall unsupported.
I called the manufacturer of the pistol and explained what was happening, and what I had found, and he theorized that the barrel is comming out of lock up too early, and to increase the recoil spring from 20lb to 24lb. A reasonable theory so I tried it, and it did reduce the bulging somewhat but not all together. He now suggests that I increase to 26 or 27 lb.
I am trying to develop a hunting load, I wouldn't want to be shooting hot loads all the time due to the beating they will subject my pistols to. 900-1000 fps is fine for punching paper or defensive loads, but I was hoping to get 1250-1300 for hunting (safely), and for summertime backpacking bear loads.

So my questions are as follows:
Am I expecting too much in terms of velocity for a hunting load considering the capabilities of the 10MM round?
Do you think the brand x pistol has too much unsupported case wall?
Regardless of case bulge should I be stopping as soon as I see the slightest createring and flattening of primers?
Will the heavier slide and spring add to pressure inside the chamber by staying in lockup longer and requiring more back pressure to cycle the action?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

What I've learned about holsters for my G29

I recently bought a G29 and have been looking for holsters and have bought and played around with a few. I thought I'd share some of what I've learned to save others the time and I by no means think I am any kind of expert, cop, soldier, holster designer, tactical weapons expert, ect. Theses are simply observations from a civilian living in the woods who happens to carry a G29 on a daily basis and has never attended Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, Seal training, ect. Simply put-- just my opinion.

1. Fobus makes left and right hand holsters for the G29 in many configurations although they are apparently junk.

2. Leather G17, G19, ect holsters will usually fit the G29 but plastic ones will not.

3. Bianch Carrylock and Paddlelock holsters for 9mm Glocks fit the G29 well. The leather stretches to fit and the trigger guard is close enough for the retention lock to fit nicely.

4. Most Glaco IWB Glock 9mm leather fits the G29 nicely.

5. Galco IWB with the horsehide and J hook so that you can tuck your shirt in are the exception to the leather rule because the leather is so stiff.

7. A fobus will put light little wearmarks on the trigger guard where the passive retention grabs as the gun as it is holstered.

8. Of all the holsters metioned, the standard fobus paddle is the most comfortable, stable, and easy to draw (for me) although apparrently it's widely accepted that they're junk.

Hope this is helpful.

Sweet deal gone sour...

I have to say I'm a bit steamed. About a month ago I spotted a S&W 1026 on Gunbroker with a 'buy it now' price of $400. I jumped on it, had my local gun shop fax out their FFL and put a money order in the mail. About two weeks went by without hearing a word from the seller and every day I stopped by the gun store they would tell me, "Not yet." I emailed and called the seller (a pawn shop) numerous times, but kept getting the run around. It had supposedly been shipped, but they couldn't give me a date or a tracking number. Finally a few days ago, after threatening legal action, they finally give me the info I asked for. They actually did ship it within a week of me sending out the money order and it was signed for at my local shop. I print up a copy of the UPS tracking info and take it in to show them. Turns out the day it showed up both the regular guys at the gun counter were both out hunting and so the person covering put it up behind the rack with the rifles, but never told anyone it had arrived. Now they can't find it! The manager was very apologetic and has stated that he'll cover my costs if it doesn't turn up by Monday, but I'm still out a 1026 at a sweet price! ARGH!!!
