AR newbie who had posted before and you all have been great and helpful. Hope you don't mind that I'm back with a couple more questions. I am looking for input about rests and whether its necessary to get a bore sight. I was planning to simply get a sandbag for the front and do my best to sight by trial and error with help of some binoculars.

I think a bore sight is not required for an AR. Do some triall and error. You can also just remover th euppper and sight down the barrel and make sure it matches up with your optic. That will get you pretty close.

I use the laser bore sight at 50 yards and it gets me on the paper with the first shot every time.

The laser would probably be a good idea. I wasn't thinking of that-I was thinking of the kind that mounts on the front of the gun and projects the grid in front of the scope.

I like the idea of a laser. What kind do you use?

I've read some general advice about sighting. It seemed like the general advice was to sight at 50yds and that this would be nearly perfect for 200 yds. But when I was playing with http://ballisticscalculator.winchester.com/ it looks like 50 yds matches up better to 150 yds?

I do not hold 100% faith in those anyway, shoot your weapon and you will get different end results.

Those are nice, but for the AR with the flash hider they do not work as well, nor will they seat into the barrel that good.

Thanks for all the input. I think I'll go with trial and error for now. Maybe save the laser for a Christmas gift.

So no one has any input on rests? Are they even that necessary for sighting / shooting? It almost feels like cheating to me. I'm sure it's easier to be accurate with everything held in place versus being held by me.

Sandbags are good. One of those rests that completely holds the gun will show where the rifle is shooting. A good amount of ammo from the same lot helps either way.

Sightmark is the one I have.

Osprey .223 here - another cartridge type boresighter.

Neil, how much range to you get with your Sightmark in relatively low light? Osprey will get out well beyond 100 yards at dawn or dusk, easy 25 yards in daylight. Osprey appears to be identical to Aimshot and I selected it because of Aimshot's claim that it is "20x brighter" which sounds like a figment of their imaginations but I'll take whatever power boost I can get.

Battery life has been quite acceptable. I'm still on my first set of cells and the device has been in and out of the gun at least half a dozen times with total burn time being at least 30 minutes with no perceptible loss of brightness yet.

Got my MBUS the other day and went out for the first time today. Set up at 50 yards and tried to put 20 on side-by-side 8.5x11 targets. Didn't hit paper. I've owned handguns and shotguns and have been accurate. But those came with fixed sights. Where do I begin with these adjustable MBUS?

move the targets closer and see where you are hitting. That's how I'd start.

Took it out to 25 yds today. Manage to put them all on paper. They kept winding up high about 8 inches. I tried adjusting the elevation and it felt like no matter how many times I turned it I kept putting them in the same place. Does any have suggestions for adjusting the mbus elevation? It looks like you're just supposed to rotate the post which is difficult to do. I was using a car key and it looked like I was stripping it a bit.

I use the tip of a bullet to rotate the front post.
