Are we talking detachable carry handles or actual A1/A2 handles. The Detachable ones have a narrower slot to accomodate the hardware for removal and reattachment.

I'm sure there were some big guys who had issues with them back then, but remember that they were designed for late teen troops fresh from bootcamp and ITS. Lean and mean. If Stoner had built them for middle aged guys with fat fingers and a beer gut he might have put wheels and a cup holder on it.

Does anyone actually use the carry handle to carry an AR? As I recall, in Basic training, when we went to the range, the Range Instructors wouldn't let you use the carry handle. We either had it slung or used the handgrip and guards (port arms.)

It wasn't really created as a carry handle. It was a raised sight base that protected the early charging handle that was top mounted. Even though the charging handle was moved shortly thereafter it was still a good sight base and increased rigidity for the upper receiver. The idea of a carry handle was a tertiary idea at best.
The US military teaches the avoidance of it for many reasons. Carried in that position it is extremely hard to bring into play fast. That's the reason for the Port Arms position. Also if dropped it is horizontal. If it accidentally discharged in formation it will likely hit a person or several. Having the barrel vertical means the only likely person hurt is the trooper who dropped it. Better the idiot gets shot in the head than his buddy nearby. It also just looks sloppy and the military is having none of that.

What Zeke said. If you got caught carry your M16/M4 by the handle, it was a sh***y day for you.

You already have your front hand in place on the magwell for shooting offhand and only need to bring your trigger hand up. But holding with fingers through the carry handle means you have to switch carries a couple times to bring it into a shooting stance. I frequently use the off hand magwell grip with my thumb around the delta ring when I'm not using a sling.

They already make it! It's called resting your AR on the open window frame of your pickup truck door.

My brother told me the same thing about using it as a carry handle as a Marine. Definitely a no-no.

There was always one in boot camp that made that mistake on issue day. The DI's were on the lookout for it to happen. They pounced immediately and made a huge example of them right in the armory with 100 bends-n-thrusts (pushups are easy compared to those) and compared you to Chair Force slime to further drive the insult home. The message was delivered good and hard right from the beginning. I don't think I ever saw a Jarhead after bootcamp carry that way. The message had been burned in good and hard. Almost never saw a Jarhead put down a rifle on the ground either unless he sat down next to it. A Marine always respected his rifle to the utmost. It may have been a worn out 'Nam surplus rattle box, but it was clean as heck and you loved it more than anything but your mom. Likely treated it better than you treated your mom too.
