I have never painted a gunstock before but as long as it is sanded to bare wood you should seal it with primer and then paint it.
Why not leave the wood alone and get a synthetic stock setup for it? You could always put the wood back on later if you change your mind.

woods not that high quality, id rather buy nice looking wood, if i wanted the "wood" look. and i dont trust plastic parts that are cheap, and i dont want to spend a ton on them..

I understand completely.
The last WASR10 that I owned had nasty looking wood. I tore the rifle apart and sanded the crap out of it and stained it with a medium cherry and put a low gloss finish after it dried. It actualy turned out looking pretty nice.

actually, i dont. but i coudlnt stand the color of the wood on the ak. the hand guards didnt match the stock, and all 3 pieces looked like crap. id love some dark red wood. but for now, i like it. i have has a preference to black long before this. im not goth, lol, but i like black shirts. black cars, black stuff. i just think it lends it self to looking more sleek if its black... flea.gif

DO NOT paint the Mosin black, you will be kicking yourself the whole time you're stripping it back down. I don't have any pics but I did it about 3 years ago to my first one. If you want it black what I suggest is an ATI stock, they look pretty good. I ended up selling that rifle to buy another one, but if you want to refinish yours I would be more than happy to tell you how I do mine. By the way, nice job on the AK
