Full Version: Question about becoming an auxiliary police officer...

I know alot of the LEOs around here, mainly because my dad is the assistant DA. I was talking to one of my dads good friends who is also one of the top dogs ad the local PD, and I was asking him what I would have to do to go shoot at teh PDs shooting range. Its like 5 miles from my house vs. about 25 for where I usually go. He was saying that I would have to be with a LEO, but he would go with me whenever he could. But he also mentioned about becoming an auxiliary P.O. I didnt really get to talk to him about it because he had to leave, but I might be interested. So what is involved with being an auxiliary police officer and what would I get? Would I have a gun, a badge, and a uniform? Would it pretty much just be dong stuff like security at fairs and such? Id probably be interested. Ill probably get to talk to him next week.
Thanks.

Interviewing the prospective department is as important as their interview of you. Find out what your duties will be, and what your training will be. There are some departments that swear you in, qualify you with a gun, and put you on the street. Even if this is with a seasoned officer, or experienced reserve, training is important, there are MANY things you need to know before you start interacting with Joe Dirt on the street.

Avoid departments that skimp on training, and those where you have no hope of working on your own, in a patrol environment. They're most likely to cut your training, as you'll always have someone looking over your shoulder, supervising your every move. Look for one that allows their reserves/auxiliary officers to work towards solo status, and has a decent FTEP process. You'll learn more, and be in much better shape to become a full-time JBT if you're looking at that as a career.

Im not really sure if I want to pursue a career as on LEO, but I think it would be nice to have the experience.

And the guy I was talking to ran into my dad at the DAs office, and he was saying how he thinks I should become a cop. I wouldnt doubt it if he would be the one to take me in for some basic patrol stuff. Hopefully I can talk to him later this week.

If you decide to go fulltime.....

Think about it long and hard.

Remember most of the time you will drive around and take paper.

It's not all car chases, gun fights and women with fake tits chasing you around.....well the last part is entirely possible but most of em aren't exactly what you want...for a wife anyway.

Talk to your significant other about it big time because your relationship will no doubt suffer if you don't and it's still gonna be hard. Finding the daughter of a police officer is a plus because they know what their getting into as they grew up around it and understand.

Etho is correct in all aspects of his post.

The most accurate is that wives and girlfriends pay a price as well and when they pay you pay.

I spent 25 years plus as an LEO and have paid that price.....

Think long and hard is right brother . I am a reserve for our sheriff department (fairly big city) We are allowed the full spectrum from a-band to sweeps/raids. you kind of have to take the good with the bad but i can not OVER EMPHSIZE DO NOT !! go into this with a laxadasicall attitude if all you are looking for is a close gun range. I joind as a stepping stone to full time . It is a Great thing if your heart is in it. but there are real dangers. The bigger your tool box the better off you are in all aspects of life so train train train. You have to always rember the brothers you are riding with count on you and this is there livelyhood so you will be held to a higer standard untill you have proven yoursyelf because you are "parttime". You will come out of this with lifelong friends and brothers. I truly hope you pursue it but only after sincere deep thought . I hope this helps sory for the rant guys lol.
