Oh, I use the Peltor Tactical 6 electronic muffs. They're great for pistols, and work well with most long guns.

+1 I use them for all types of shooting. They have a low enough profile that there is no problem with rifle shooting. The price tag is also reasonable for a good quality electronic muff.

Another Vote for the Peltor Comtacs. I use those outdoors, or when I want to carry on conversation or hear range commands.

Indoors, I use Howard Leight Lightening 31's and foam plugs when I shoot a handgun.

If I'm outdoors shooting shotgun or rifle alone, I use foam plugs.

I try mostly to use the three stage rubber 3M push in plugs, ask OSP and LPD were we yelling at each other with the two stage plugs I keep in my shooting bag.
When I get back home to KY Dad and I always use the muffs, they are easier and we are not around anyone so we take our time. smile.gif

I use earmuffs. Non-electronic. I think that plugs and muffs together is excessive. You only really need one or the other. It works fine for even 8mm Mauser or 12 Gauge. My ears don't hurt nor ring after firing. It keeps the sound down to a pleasent level.

Until you work an 8 hour shift running an indoor range where officers are shooting shotgun all night.

I tried out a friends Tactical 6 muffs. Those things are awesome. Cabela's has a great deal on these right now. They are selling for $70 that's a lot cheaper than I have seen elsewhere.

Indoors I've started using plugs and earmuffs. Geez Louise, some of these gosh-darned guns are so loud. I'll use either electronic or non-electronic muffs.

It's those centerfire pistols that those insane Pistol Division shooters use, isn't it?

+1 on the Lightnings for pistol. Great protection and very comfy, even with Silencio plugs under.

When my GF shoots with me I give the Lightnings to her and I use plugs and my old Stiehl ProMarks I got with my blower and weed eater years ago. They work very well too. thumbsup.gif

QUOTE (rasputin @ January 3rd 2006 3:54 PM) *
Aren't there some nerves associated with hearing that are outside the ear and unprotected by plugs alone. I'm thinking that I heard somewhere that the concussion of gunshots adversely affects said nerves. Anyone heard that? If true, it's another reason to use muffs.

After going deaf in one ear at age 8, I am very protective of the hearing in the other ear. Rasputin is somewhat correct. You get some of your hearing through bone conduction. The muffs help degrade this by covering the area around your ear as well as the ear canal.

The best protection is provided by plugs in the canal IF they are inserted correctly. Muffs help add another layer of protection.

What I found works well for me is to use plugs under the electronic muffs. This protects my hearing as much as possible, but the electronics amplify non gunshot sounds so I can still talk and hear others.

I usually use plugs, sometimes I'll use muffs, but I can't use earmuffs when shooting a rifle. Just gets in the way and is uncomfortable. I buy the highest NRR plugs I can find. I don't shoot indoors much at all...99% of my shooting is outdoors in open spaces, so the plugs usually work super. I've got a slight case of tinnitus, so I try to protect what I've got. I guess too many years of sitting close to the TV with the volume up, listening to loud music, and in the last 7 or so years, shooting stuff has left my ears with a low ringing. Sometimes it sucks.

Hearing loss is genetic in my famdamily, so I know that what I've got won't last unaided into my golden years.

I can only think of two shooting sessions that I didn't wear protection, and it left me hurting afterward. Both were with my brother - the first was my first outing with a centerfire pistol. He's got poor hearing from his days in the Marines, so it didn't bother him much to fire w/o plugs. First shot left me deaf. Rest of the mag was nothing after that cuz I couldn't hear a thing. Second one hurt even more...we went out to sight in the scope on my pop's 30-30...forgot the plugs at home. Made it thru little over a box of the stuff before I couldn't take it anymore. I feel superbly stupid now for it.
