Aren't there some nerves associated with hearing that are outside the ear and unprotected by plugs alone. I'm thinking that I heard somewhere that the concussion of gunshots adversely affects said nerves. Anyone heard that? If true, it's another reason to use muffs.
After going deaf in one ear at age 8, I am very protective of the hearing in the other ear. Rasputin is somewhat correct. You get some of your hearing through bone conduction. The muffs help degrade this by covering the area around your ear as well as the ear canal.
The best protection is provided by plugs in the canal IF they are inserted correctly. Muffs help add another layer of protection.
What I found works well for me is to use plugs under the electronic muffs. This protects my hearing as much as possible, but the electronics amplify non gunshot sounds so I can still talk and hear others.
