I really like the DD two peice free float that installs easily without removing the front sight but $300 is a little high for me. How bad is it to install another brand (like YHM) yourself? I'd like to have a free float and having a little extra rail in front of the sight, like the DD Omega, would be great. How many special tools would I have to have? I have a carbine if that matters. Thanks for any help.

I put a DD Omega 12.0 on my carbine. I had to remove the front sight, and you have to remove the muzzle brake when you do that. I think if you get one with a slot for the front sight, you dont need to remove any of it. But I have one that covers the gas block, so I had to put a lop profile gas block on.

Most other free float rails require the removal of the barrel. You will need an armorers wrench, and a vice block. About $60 for those.

It isn't too difficult. I have a Samson similar to the one you describe. Taking of the handguard is cake, but the retainer ring that holds it together near the receiver is more of a pain. I just 'dremeled' mine in about 10 minutes, then adding the new quad-rail handguard is all of 5 minutes.

Any decent handguard will come with instructions. Honestly, this is probably one of the more difficult mods, which is cool considering all the tricked out stuff you can do with relative ease.

Cheers,

I know you do not like the price of the $300.00, but how are you going to set your rifle up? You want rails for accessories etc?

Midwest Industries has a two piece extended carbine rail that allows use of the standard front sight base and doesn't require removal of the front sight base or muzzle device. Link. In case I haven't said it, welcome.gif to the Armory!

Don't want to hijack the thread, but I originally bought the Omega 9.0 from DD to replace the stock handguard, then to my dismay found it to be too long. So I ordered the DD Omega X 12 rail, that has the cutout for the front sight, which would work for speedfreak as well. But you still have to take off the retainer ring to mount it, which means you still have to remove the frontsight and muzzle brake, correct?
