We had a HUGE family reunion over the weekend and to my surprise and my son’s, the family presented Alex with my grandfathers discharge papers AND dog tags from WWI.

This was the first time I have ever seen my grandfathers discharge papers and dog tags. My mother then showed me these two (new to me) photos of my grandpa.

Before these the only military picture of him I knew of was the one of him below with the Mohawk.

True family treasures.

I have my great grandfathers discharge papers from when he retired. He was a WWII vet but did not end up retiring until the 70s. He volunteered for the army and two days later is draft paperwork showed up for the Marines, he ended up in the Army serving under Patton in Eurpoe for two and a half years. When he passed I was the one that set up his uniform for the services. Hardest thing I have ever done in my life. Also one of the proudest things I have ever done. I ended up with the flag. He is the reason I first put the uniform on and the reason I continue to wear it today. I have his flag in a case now with all of the appropriate decorations mounted below it.

Thanks guys, I’m going to talk with Alex about having them mounted. He also has my father’s (his grandfathers) medals and awards from WWII. Now my son has medals of his own that he earned in Iraq. It would be nice to have them all mounted to pass on to future generations.
