Elk season is coming up next week, and I always like to have a nice fixed blade sharp knive to carry around when I am hiking around the woods.
I am looking at possibly getting a Chris Reeve pacific knife right now. I have a shop locally that has one in stock, and the guy said he would sell it to me for $250, but I am open to other suggestons. I had a Gerber LMF II Asek before, but if I am going to buy another one, I might as well upgrade.
Thanks

I am going to go fondle the pacific knife a little more, and see how I like it. it has S30V steel, which has proven to me that it will really hold an edge well (I have a Benchmade Mini-Skirmish that has S30V). Thanks for the suggestions.

QUOTE (Gmountain @ October 29th 2009 5:13 PM) Win. RAT is some awesome stuff. Ive started using my Izula as my work knife. An RC-6 will be replacing my seal pup shortly. I may get a 4 too just for the heck of it. Look in to the RC 5 if you like to cut junk cars, ships, or abandoned houses apart in your spare time.

If you are looking for a good field dressing or skinning knife, Moore Maker brand is what to get. http://www.bigbendsaddlery.com/mmknives.htmlThis place sells them about as cheap as you can find them. They are a damn High quality blade and made from Old School Carbon Steel. They will rust if you dont take care of them. I field dress and skin upwards of 25 Wild hogs and between 8 to 10 deer a year for folks. There is no substitute for a good carbon steel in a working knife. If you like cutting beer cans, trees, cynder blocks, etc.....I'd get something else more tacticool. Jchtrh, that is a fine looking knife. I might just try one of those out sometime. What kind of steel is that blade? Chaos

Thanks, here you go, I have found it to be one of the most used knives I have, it has quarter several Moose...skin and quartered seals, whales and bears. This knife is a work horse. QUOTE Most Helle blades are made of triple laminate stainless steel. The center portion is of high carbon stainless steel* , hardened to 58-59 HRC. This is the harder part of the blade that holds the edge. The outside layers are tough 18/8 stainless. This makes a blade that can be sharpened to a very fine razor edge, and yet is not brittle. It is also easier to resharpen because much of the steel being removed is softer than it would be otherwise. Non-laminated blades are used where the thickness would be inappropriate, for example fillet blades.
Most Helle blades also have the distinctive Scandinavian grind. This is a wide, flat bevel that runs to the edge. There is no secondary bevel as on other knives. This results in an exceptionally keen edge that is easy to sharpen without jigs or other gadgets.
But a knife is more than its blade. The proper handle is necessary to safely use the blade to its fullest. Helle handles have two properties. They feel good in the hand, and appeal to the eye. Curly Birch and other natural materials are carefully shaped and finished to produce a knife that looks as good as it functions.
Similar care goes into the sheath. Good craftsmanship and the perceptible quality of the material, make for a sheath which is both strong and attractive.

I actually bought a couple SOG Seal Pup Elites here on the forum from a group buy at a good price. I didn't like the sheath so bought the SOG nylon which I now keep a Leatherman original in the outside pocket. Not having that much money in these knives, I keep one on my boat and the other my designated field knife, which gave my other knives (some way more expensive) a rest. I've been pretty impressed with the Seal Pup. Its very sharp, just the right size not too large or too small, the handgrip is both comfortable when chopping as well as a firm grasp when wet, and has held up to everything from throwing to skinning and cleaning fish for a few years now. They're pretty inexpensive these days and in my opinion an excellent value. Tj
