Help edjucate me on 1911 to 10mm.

I remember reading that you needed a full 10mm upper, but I don't really see why, if the G21 is just a barrel swap/mag swap away why is'nt the 1911? the extractor should be large enough to compensate for .025 difference in case rim location.
