was out in the barn with Colt and found his torch lighter...you know the ones with the little cup, flint, and spring loaded handles?
I found out that by loading the cup with cotton or steel wool, it only takes a squeeze or 3 of the handle to start a fire. It's one hand operation, and the burning tinder stays in the cup so you can move it without disturbing it. Your other hand is free to manipulate other tinder, fan flames, shoot zombies, whatever! I thought it was too easy to work, so I tried it....worked like a charm!
any other tips you want to share?

Good find. I have used one many times at work to start our torch. I have never thought of it as an emergency fire starter.

I like to make my own cardboard candles. I take a tuna can, cut a strip of cardboard about 1" wide, and about a foot long. I coil this in the can, then pour parafin into it, setting a wick in the middle. This will start all but the wettest wood ablaze.
I like your idea too, I might have to put one in my pack...

I like canned tuna and cause of art stuff, theres usually an abundance of cardboard in my apartment. Got some old shoe strings for the wicks, just need some wax. Know where I can get some cheap? Figure these would be pretty usefull in a BOB if you just put the tuna lid back on and duct taped it together for storage.

cool, I have been using the cheapo walmart firestarting logs. they work like a charm, but I am always willing to try a new method.

Figure these would be pretty usefull in a BOB if you just put the tuna lid back on and duct taped it together for storage. The wax is pretty easy to find, I just use old candles that have burned down too far, and I have my wife bugging all her friends for their old candles. I have a couple of 5 gallon buckets full of that stuff sitting in my garage. Keep the tuna lid handy, it makes a good "snuffer" when you want to put it out. I might use a whole candle in a dire emergency, but otherwise they will last 2-3 fires, if you build it right, pull the candle out w/o spilling the molten wax, and get it snuffed out.

Welder striker like this? I have a few of them, one in the house, and one in the bag plus one in the pickup toolbox. All the flints on the quality strikers are replaceable and come in packs of five flints.

Cotton balls (while as cheap as Hillary Clinton) still cost money, plain ol` dryer lint is free, and burns so fast and furious, you`ll have a new fear (dryer fires)......

I didn't see if anybody mentioned but if you knead in petroleum jelly to the cotton ball it wll not only light easier but burn longer rivaling the wax logs.
BTW, you can find cotton balls in medicine bottles, pills, for free.
