I have a friend who is a citizen of the Republic of South Vietnam. That's right, a man without a country. He's been in the US Marine Corps since he was 18, active and reserve, and he's still trying to get citizenship. ??? He even showed up to the immigration office in dress blues.

Is he inactive reserve with a US address now? Sounds like an Armory mission to me.

Last I heard he was called up for active duty after 9/11 and has been active since. Scout Sniper, works as a body guard for a general in Hawaii. I miss him, he was pretty cool. And his girlfriend was seriously hot!

This sounds less like a red tape bungle and more like a political act. Ever since the Clinton days the State Dept has been trying to make nice with Vietnam. They might be blocking his citizenship to not irritate the Vietnamese diplomat corps.

Doesn't stop it from being absolutely immoral. Realpolitik is an ugly thing.

At least the Pentagon is covering for him. That's something.

i am currently in citizen limbo. i was born in Germany to an American soldier, but my birth was off base and my mother didn't know to register me with U.S. embassy. I thought i was a citizen until i lost my wallet and tried to get new i.d., then the shtf. before i knew i wasnt a citizen, i had voted, purchased firearms as a citizen, etc. all reasons to get deported. an immigration lawyer would not accept my retainer saying i should just stay a permanent resident since i had represented myself as a citizen (ignorance to law is no excuse for breaking the law). now almost 10 years since i found out i am not a citizen, i am trying to attain citizenship the hard way. birth certificate already translated, now retaining a lawyer to prove the man on the certificate (my sperm donor father... he didnt raise me or pay a cent of child support) was a U.S. soldier in germany at the time.

I was about to say that if a parent is a US citizen at your birth then you are a citizen automatically. If you lived as a citizen for many years they should have to strip you of your citizenship and prove you're not one. Your "father" needs an asswhoopin'.

You are automatically a citizen if the parent files the proper paperwork at the U.S. embassy, or the child is born on military base hospital.

Only if you were born in late August 1982 or afterwards and actually only the first five bullet points here apply. If you can prove your father was in Germany during the period of time of your conception/birth, you are legally a US citizen. If you know who he is a court can compel him to produce a DNA sample. The only reason for him not to is the question of back child support, but that's not a defense just an excuse.
