Sad to say that a traumatic event is the only likely reason to change. Someone without a gun gets hurt and the person wants a gun now. Someone hurt by a gun causes the reverse stance.
In a traumatic event people like to objectify the cause. It's easier to glorify or vilify the inanimate object because it says nothing to dissuade the person. Call a gun a hero or villain and it sits there quietly accepting of its new role. Try that with people and they fight the new label.
Seemingly today, pretty much everything we are passionate about (theology, human rights and yes, gun control) are done with some amount of emotion. We need to leave emotion out and present logical arguments.
The fact is, guns don't kill people. Guns are dispassionate, cold, inanimate objects by which terrible people do terrible things. Yes, sometimes they get in the hands of innocent people and they do careless things. They are also a tool which we use to defend ourselves from people who have so much
emotion that they'll destroy themselves and every loved one you know. The only thing we need to do is educate people about proper storage and handling of firearms. The people of this forum are the model gun-owning citizens by which all other gun owners should be measured.
Quit arguing gun control and argue responsible gun ownership or don't argue at all. If you must, then don't forget to argue about all the lives our guns have saved.
