her basic argument was 1) kids get ahold of guns, 2) innocent people die. 3) without guns there would be no wars. and the best of it all was, 4) her father died because a kid shot her dad and when he turned around he didnt shoot back because the guy was a kid. he was a cop. so he could have unholstered and shot she says, but didnt because it was a kid.

i already told my father every argument, please state them, he thinks im nuts

(btw hes an ex-cop and ex-marine...i think he just wants to get in her pants)

1) not if their parents are responsible and teach them gun saftey at a young age or if they secure their firearms.

2)while true, many die as they have not taken the effort to arm/protect themselves...

3) see any war film such as braveheart, troy, king aurthur, 300, etc... ever hear of the crusades??? not to mention the MILLIONS of battles through the centuries.

4)No offense to him... but he was stupid. Doesn't matter WHO is holding the gun. its STILL you or them...

So far we are at, hold on, let me check..... ZERO!

QUOTE (+Zeke+ @ November 1st 2009 7:11 PM) *
Sad to say that a traumatic event is the only likely reason to change. Someone without a gun gets hurt and the person wants a gun now. Someone hurt by a gun causes the reverse stance.

In a traumatic event people like to objectify the cause. It's easier to glorify or vilify the inanimate object because it says nothing to dissuade the person. Call a gun a hero or villain and it sits there quietly accepting of its new role. Try that with people and they fight the new label.

Seemingly today, pretty much everything we are passionate about (theology, human rights and yes, gun control) are done with some amount of emotion. We need to leave emotion out and present logical arguments.

The fact is, guns don't kill people. Guns are dispassionate, cold, inanimate objects by which terrible people do terrible things. Yes, sometimes they get in the hands of innocent people and they do careless things. They are also a tool which we use to defend ourselves from people who have so much emotion that they'll destroy themselves and every loved one you know. The only thing we need to do is educate people about proper storage and handling of firearms. The people of this forum are the model gun-owning citizens by which all other gun owners should be measured.

Quit arguing gun control and argue responsible gun ownership or don't argue at all. If you must, then don't forget to argue about all the lives our guns have saved.

I personally wouldn't "laugh in her face", but thats just me. I think that someone else mentioned the fact that doing something like that just polarizes someone even more than they already were to begin with.

The woman's father was killed with someone who used a gun to commit the murder. Of course she is going to be reluctant to accept your argument. Ive been involved in discussions with people about guns in the past who have had similar experiences which shaped them into the same belief system. When they said that they lost a friend, relative, whatever to "gun violence", it is important that you acknowledge their loss and express sympathy for that loss. And dont acknowledge it by saying "Oh man, that sucks" or "Im sorry for your loss... BUT"

Take a time out from the discussion to say that you are sorry that they had to experience such a horrible tragedy. Then say that while your opinions may differ on guns, you probably share the same opinion as to penalties for misusing guns. Say that even though you adamantly oppose restrictions on LAW ABIDING CITIZENS, you are absolutely in favor of SEVERE penalties for those who misuse firearms.

At this point there is nothing you can do as to how the conversation went. it also sounded like perhaps your dad sided with her. He may not agree with her, but he probably sided with her. Not just cause he wants to get in her pants, but probably just because he thought you were disrespectful. If I were you I would try to smooth things out the next time you see her. Tell her that while the two of you have opposing view points, you respect her beliefs and ask her to respect yours and simply agree to disagree.

Oh btw, As towards your last comment.

In my generation, we had a name for chicks like that. We called them "Hippie Chicks" and no we didn't avoid them. "Hippie Chicks" that are loose with their moral logic are typically loose with their morals especially if they are on a quest to convert you. wink.gif

And now those "hippie chicks" are in the House of Representatives and one is called Maddam Speaker Pelosi! You see what that got us!

This women is dumber than a box of rocks.... let your ole man get a littel then dump her

Well, as a good conservative who believes in the rights of americans as individuals thinks she is entitled to her opinion.

The big difference is that as a conservative I find that if she doesn't like guns she has the freedom to not buy one.
As a liberal she doesn't like guns and wants to keep everybody from owning them.

I as a conservative think she should be able to say what she wants as long as it doesn't directly endanger someone (yelling "Fire" in a movie theater would be an example of such endagering speech).
She as a liberal would like to confine speech to "politically correct", sanitized speech that provides no offense. (the Constitution never said there was a right to not be offended).

If she thinks guns are the source of all violence she needs to figure out how Caine killed Able.

I've been a gun owning, liberal, American since I was born. The right to bear arms IS a liberal view...some just forget how we got here. wink.gif
