I was looking at AR-15 parts tonight and saw a chrome (like the pipes on my Harley) bolt carrier. My M&P 15T is advertised as to have a chrome bolt carrier along with some other chromed components but my bolt carrier doesnt look chrome to me. Please take a look at these pics and let me know what you think....

It's a more expensive BCG, it's TiN... Titanium Nitride. It will have the same general characteristics as a chrome one...

TS, would it be considered an expensive upgrade? I guess I just want to make sure I got what I paid for.

Yeah, a TiN BCG is about $40 to $50 more expensive than a regular BCG.

I had a chrome carrier and it had a flat silver looking finish. I checked the S&W website page and it does say "Chromed Components: Barrel Bore, Gas Key, Bolt Carrier".
I think they probably meant chrome lined carrier bore, as well as the gas key bore, which is more typical. I'd call them to get clarification and have them correct either the error on their site or your weapon. Unless it truly is TiN, but I was under the impression somehow that TiN had a goldish hue to it.

Looks like a standard bcg to me. I think the right term should be chrome lined. To verify this, disassmble th BCG and look at the internal surfaces wher the bolt rides in the carrier. This should have a dull silver finish. It does improve wear characteristics, as well as make cleaning easier, as far as the inside of the bolt carrier is concerned.

It may be the flash that's making me think it's goldish... soundman can make that assessment himself. On an S&W it is most likely a chromelined bolt.

That's a semi-auto AR15 carrier and doesn't appear to be TiN. TiN is way more gold in color.

The DPMS TiN looks like this:

Here's what a few different carriers look like.

This is where I interject Stick's epic BCG thread over on weaponevolution:

BCGs

For anyone who has never seen WeaponEvolution before it is an impressive website. Great reviews and outstanding gun porn from Stick and the others over there.

For those PMAG haters I'd recommend the the "PMAGs- Tested Past Destruction" thread under reviews.

What benefit would there be switching to a TiN BCG compared to Chrome Lined BCG? I see some differences for better gas escape, but more for material, would there be a better reasoning behind it?
