I sent this to my best friend, Because she thinks I carry a gun just to look cool.
I don't carry a gun to kill people. I carry a gun to keep from being killed.
I don't carry a gun to scare people. I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.
I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid. I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.
I don't carry a gun because I'm evil. I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.
I don't carry a gun because I hate the government. I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.
I don't carry a gun because I'm angry. I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.
I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone. I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.
I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy. I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.
I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man. I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.
I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate. I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.
I don't carry a gun because I love it. I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.
Police Protection is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves. Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.
And then her response;
Uh, The chances of you getting shot. Are veerrrrry slim. Second, If you are "attacked" Chances are you won't have time to whip out your gun. Third, You wouldn't need a gun to protect you if you can used your fists. Fourth. You only use it to shoot random shat, chances of you actually "defending" yourself and getting away with it in this fuzzed up court system...not likely. Don't mean to be mean, but seriosly, It's just a shiny toy to scare children.
I've never been so disappointed in her, Shes one of the the smartest people I know. Honestly, I feel like If my own child said that to me... Id slap'em for being so stupid (Not really, I'm frustrated as hell.) I don't even know what to say. Its like she forgets I'm not exactly that kid she knew in highschool, Quite plainly... I'm a professional Soldier... A REAL gunfighter, She doesn't understand the other side of the fence.

QUOTE (Watson @ May 11th 2009 11:50 PM) Soon to be college educated, Perfect high school student working towards becoming a Veterinarian. You got it right, Thinks the world is how you view it, Not how it really is. I've tried their views... I dated a hippie once (I still carried my gun).... For about two weeks. I gave up after that, Couldn't take the bullshat anymore. I'll stick with being just the way I am. People say I remind them of cane-less House, From the TV show Oh hell! She's sooo clueless! Such a shame. What a tough way to learn that there is plenty of scum out there. QUOTE What do you think it will take for these people to learn? Another World War, Revolution, Slap in the mouth? Nope. Just a few more girls to go through what your friend had happen to her. Can you imagine being in NOLA during the floods? OK. Now, Imagine you're a young, naive, high-school girl, or college-aged women, and you were in NOLA during the shat-fest. No cops. No National Guard. No weapon. Nothing but the clothes on your back. Kinda scary, huh?

The NRA has a point about the inadvisability of simply taking guns away from the populace. If that were possible, it would not disarm that small percentage of the population willing to break the law.... Punishing people who obey the law is backward thinking. — Hugh Downs, Veteran ABC newsman "I would like to direct this to the distinguished members of the panel: You lousy corksuckers. You have violated my farging rights. Dis somanumbatching country was founded so that the liberties of common patriotic citizens like me could not be taken away by a bunch of fargin iceholes... like yourselves." -Roman Moroni

QUOTE (Watson @ May 11th 2009 10:03 PM) Just one of those things I guess, Known her since elementary school. Shes never worked a day in her life, Never been in any bad situation whatsoever, Gets money handed to her from mom and dad... We just might not be getting along too well here in the 'later' life. Guess that's another one of those things. You grew up. She did not. You had to fend for yourself. She never has. Therin lies the problem. Until the world bites her in the ass, she will never understand you and what you do.

Sounds like a typical intellectual elitist, who has never been a victim, or potential victim, of a violent crime.
Let's see how she feels after she's mugged, carjacked, or raped.
Abort! Abort! Hey, I'm an intellectual elitist. I'm also the proud papa of well over twenty various firearms, a libertarian and a realist. I know the world is full of buttholes and I am the foot. I had a lot of friends like this girl when I was in my twenties. Had, operative word. I walked away from some, some walked away from me.

We all know people like that. Some might be/have been friends, some co-workers, some mere acquaintances. Seemingly intelligent people that never will 'get it' no matter what. The girl I thought I was going to marry when I was 18 was like that. She was afraid of guns, anti-gun. Her parents never let guns in the house (although ironically, while vacationing in Kansas over X-mas break, her dad and little brother went pheasant hunting a LOT and liked it and liked shooting the shotguns...) We split up for other reasons, but looking back I'm glad I didn't wind up with her. I've changed a lot, politics-wise since I was in high school. At one point I actually liked Bill Clinton. Didn't care about the AWB, or what he was doing to gun-rights. My dad never talked a lot about guns, but always had them. He carried a gun everywhere we went, with or without a permit. No one ever knew it unless the situation demanded it's presence be known. shat - he took a .38 smith, a .30-30 winchester, and a 20ga shotty through Canada once w/o declaring them because as he saw it - we were just passing through and it was none of their damn business. I never thought people shouldn't carry guns, but when I was 15, 16, 17 and starting to look at the world, I didn't see the need for people to have "assault weapons". That changed after I turned 18 and got out of high school, and started looking at the world as it really was. I just needed a little eye-opening experience. When I started looking seriously at becoming a cop, and started doing ride-alongs and volunteering as an explorer I saw a LOT of things that made me realize the world is not rainbows and sunshine. Bad people do bad things to good people and the police only show up after everything is already done and someone is broken or bleeding or dead. The real world is nothing like the old episodes of Dragnet, Adam 12, CHIPS, or any of the old cop shows that always had the good guys charing in right before the bad guys hurt or killed someone.
Then as life went along I had a number of encounters which left me shaken, because there was nothing I could really do to protect myself in those situations. By that time in life I was a 3rd degree blackbelt in taekwon do, but you can't defend against someone using a vehicle as a weapon with your hands and feet (two instances I became target of a road-rager, with my family in the car. The police could do nothing, because they didn't witness it and the vehicle and driver were long gone by the time the cops got there). There was one difference in the road rage incidents though - the first time, I was only 20 years old. Didn't own a firearm. Was at the mercy of this idiot bent on running us off the road or causing an accident. The second time was after I was 21. I was carrying a pistol this time. When he saw me reaching for it in the glove box, the guy changed his behavior and GTFO and took off like a madman.
I've explained this to people who ask why I feel the need to carry. They still don't get it. I worked as an armed security guard, and even some of my co-workers didn't get it. They carried a gun at work, to protect themselves from people that would do them harm, but didn't think that joe-citizen should be carrying a gun to protect themselves. Some folks never get it. Some just need some education. Some need a close call to wake their ass up.

What an eloquent statement. I've never seen it and it's perfectly expressed. Did you write it or is it taken from something?

hey watson...sorry to hear you & your friend are growing apart...
I have/am experiencing the same thing with some of my friends. now that I'm married, have a daughter, etc, etc...I have responsibilities that some of them just can't understand. (yet...)
that said, dude, she's a girl...and while there are some tuff chicks in this world, you can't expect all of them to understand. never expect a woman to fully understand something (like combat/defense, etc) that is a man's responsibility/calling. any more than us fellas could ever fully understand nurturing a child like a woman/mother.
it's just not her place to do/understand that stuff...
it does however, sound like she's a bit sheltered/spoiled. she needs a reality check, which WILL happen...life kicks everybody in the ass sooner or later...

She is likely to become a victim. This type of individual will either:
a) blame the weapon used to commit the crime, or;
b) blame the person commiting said crime.
This is where "Occam's 'razor'" comes into the equation. "Occam's 'razor'" states that "the most simple explanaton for an occurrence/phenomenon, is most likely correct." This is as logic dictates.
I hope that she learns this the easy way, instead of dying from "terminal ignorance."

I am very very glad that I got a gun. When I first got to college, there was a slew of 3 or so murders in town, and everyone knows the cocaine trade here is freaking rediculous. I borrowed a .38 special from my dad which stays in my bedside table, and I have my baby desert eagle in the console of my car. My balls are not quite big enough to carry it with me on campus, but it has been such a relief just to have it with me when I am out driving. I get paranoid about people getting aggressive on the road, and I feel alot safer knowing I have 16 rounds of hate and vilification ready should I need to defend myself when I am not at my house.
I know the type of person the Original Poster is talking about. There are some truly dumb people at this college. These people truly beleive that nobody would murder or hurt each other if only they didnt have guns.

My wife used to complain about me always having a weapon in the car and on my person (still complains if I open carry with her there, says she's "embarrassed") but she stopped complaining about it being in the car when we were leaving the drive thru at mcdonalds one day and this guy comes flying through the lot (from the entrance to the 2nd window is about 30 feet) she looks back and no one, pulls forward to go through the one way single lane that goes around the front of the building and the guy nearly takes our door off and she honked at him. he slammed on the brakes threw it in park and steps out. He starts walking towards the vehicle cursing so i get out 1911 on my hip. He walks by the bed of his truck starts reaching in for what i assume was a tire iron or the like, and say's "you need to tell your little c*nt wife to watch it" "the way I see it you need to slow down, there could have been a kid crossing the lot." At this point he's pulling whatever out of the bed and approaching me still cursing and raving. Before he got his hand out of the bed, he was about 5 feet from me, he was staring down the barrel of my .45 and he froze faster than I would have imagined, looked at me, still pissed off, and said "I'll slow it down next time." Turned, got in his truck and drove off. I'm now 25 and that happened last year. I've had my permit since 3 months after I turned 21 and that's the only time I've had to pull it. Sure the chances are slim, but what would have happened if I hadn't had it? What would he have done to my wife, my child, or myself? He was crazy enough to get out of his vehicle in the middle of a busy parking lot and try to pull a blunt object on me, I'm sure he would have used it. Don't worry about what other people think of you carrying, because when and if that day comes, they'll be damned glad you do.

One more thing, I really hate the people who think crime would stop if only no one could own guns. They are too ignorant to realize that these dumb gang banger criminals are not obtaining their weapons legally in the first place and taking guns away from everyday folks is only empowering the bad guys.
