Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.. My Situation is that I have somehow managed to marry the most wonderful wife in the world cause I have basically a free pass to purchase whatever AR I want for X-mas. Now I don't have empty pockets (looking to spend up to 1300) and my purpose for buying is to compete in three gun eventually. I have experience in shooting a fully auto M4 at my job (Federal Agent). I believe we have Colts, could be wrong though. I was looking at the S&W mp15s. I am liking that 5x free Mag pull magazines offer they are having and I can also use the mags at work..
The other little snag is that I live in Arizona and will so until Jan.. We are then moving to Cali.. I have heard that California is strict on the AR laws, but there might be some exceptions for law enforcement.
So there is my story. Looking for a base model AR for plinkin and three gun competition.

The Smith and Wesson is a great gun. You might also want to consider Charles Daly. Now, about that California thing.....

to the Armory Charles Daly, LMT, Colt, Bravo, get a good Mil spec one. However in the peoples republic you can only posses your rifle issued to you through your organization, unless the organization allows you to use your personal for work as well, then you can get the good stuff. That is what I have been told by several LEO folks in the people's republic.

Yeah, I was afraid to hear that. I know that ICE Special Agents get there own M4 and 870's but the same doesn't apply to the U.S.B.P... I have an assigned rifle but not a take home one that can be used for personal use..
What about registering weapons in CA.. Will I need to REG my shotguns,22lr,glock,7mm rem?? I will google it as well, but if someone knows off the top of there head.
I will talk a look at the AR manufactures that you suggested. Thanks again

Cali is a great place to visit...not so sure i'd wanna live there though. My little sis lives there with her kids so i visit about once a year and that's enough for me
just say no to useless gun control!

If you are going to be in border patrol have you considered commuting? Yuma is right there on the eastern border and you will likely get stationed somewhere between Yuma and San Diego. Or just tell your boss you only protect American states! Kali is going to gut your gun collection. A Kali legal AR is a very sad thing to behold. Five round fixed mag? Better be the reincarnation of Carlos Hathcock and make every last shot count. Then you have insane taxes and even worse prices. They could double your pay from Yuma and you would be poorer. God help you if you buy a home there. It will either cost a fortune or it will be worthless, but the property taxman will keep coming at with the high valuation. Schools are broke and so are the hospitals.

If you take a look at the M&P feedijg ramp youll notice that its different than every other AR. Its a lot more prone to failure. At bang for the buck I'd take a strong look at DPMS. That'll put you with being able to buy a good bit of ammo. I wouldnt mind having that M&P 22LR. That seems like it could be fun.

QUOTE (The War Wagon @ October 29th 2009 8:33 AM) Really? How? I think he's referring to the M4 freed ramp, which would be different from many AR's, however typically considered a very desirable feature. To the OP, assuming you figure out how to get your rifle into CA, the thing I'd be on top of would be high cap mags as many as I could get my hands on. That's one of the ban features in CA so availability will be tough. Most stores and shops won't have them and even with proof of LE many online sources refuse to ship to CA. Its really a lot like the 94' ban and what mags are there will be LE only, not as many to choose from, and availability low. Stocking up before hand, you can get what you want. As for the Smith, that's a heck of a lot of gun for the money with a lot of the high end features, you don't find in comparable priced AR's, like the M4 feed ramp, chrome chamber and bore, as well as a very well done staked gas key. Mine has become a favorite in my collection real fast. Tj

Welcome. The Smith would be a good choice. Before you move to California. I would look at the Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale in California. Find a couple of handguns that are not on the list and are popular or hard to find. Buy them before you move to California. In California they would be worth more money because civilians cannot just go to a gun store and buy a non-roster handgun. A California resident can transfer a non-roster handgun to another California resident using Private Party Transfer.

I agree with NONEYA on the handgun thing. I'm in Cali and have done several non-roster trades and purchases with fellas out of state (on slightly used pieces). As far as your AR... If your a federal agent, I seriously doubt your going to get hassled by any LE in Cali... since Uncle Sam trumps the Governator, you'll never be bothered. You may want to check with your supervisor and get a letterhead... then just submit it to the CADOJ and register it. I can't immagine you're going to have any problem at all.

Wow thanks for all the advice.. I have been in the border patrol for a little over a year now.. The Arizona LE's are easy going but the Cali ones have shown no mercy. Which I can respect i would want them to ask or feel entitled to "favors". I think the wifey and I are about 80% sure we are just going to buy a home in yuma and let me take one for the team and make the daily drive.
Thanks again for advice.. See you around the forum.

Now, California is passing law to restrict ammo purchases. We will need to do finger printing to buy ammo! All handgun ammo for now. Rifle ammo may be the next.
