Hi everybody.
I need some advice about building my next AR. I've always built in 5.56, and now it's time for something new. I've done some pretty thorough research, and I've decided on .458 socom for the next one. I can find complete uppers, but that defeats the 'build it yourself' thing.

So here goes. I know a standard lower will work, but what about the upper? I have seen uppers marked 'multiple caliber' etc-will one of these work?

What would be a good source for a barrel, bolt/carrier, etc?

A point in the right direction would be appreciated.

The Teppo Jutsu built uppers use DPMS Hi-Pro or Lo-Pro (AR15 size) stripped upper. Pac-Nor may make a .458 Socom chambered barrel. That's about all I know now.

I believe a standard upper will handle it as that is what is used in the WSSM series of cartridges. It would use the same size outside barrel tenon with changes to the lug and bolt size.

I wound up just getting an RRA .458 Socom upper instead of trying to build one, but one thing I have seen in my research on this caliber is that you may want to use a stiffer buffer spring for the .458. I believe they're available from RRA. I'm ordering one for mine. One other thing I have noticed is that the magpul Gen III magazine followers seem to work very well with the .458 round. Just my $.02.
