I got some extra hours on my last check, so I was going pick up some ammo and I saw a bore snake for .22, .223 for $15 so I grabbed it.

Man I should have got one of these years ago. Why didnt you guys tell me how awesome they are.

If you dont have one, get one. Ill be getting one for all the rifle calibers I have now.

I very seldom use the rod anymore. I have five boresnakes, two of them are .22/.223.

Fast, easy, why didn't someone think of this 50 years ago?

It's like putting the snapcap on the bottom of the ketchup bottle. Duh.

I use them on big bore rifles while on hunting trips. They are terrific "in the field." (But the stuff to clean a .458 or a .470 isn't convenient to pack around.) Would want to use both rods w patches and the b ore snake at home.

The only gun I have that doesn't have a Bore Snake is my Desert Eagle, and that's only because the don't make a .50 Bore Snake yet. Love those things. thumb.gif

Don't even go there......we even had a discussion about how to clean the freakin things!!!!!

you can squirt those things with any number of things...I use CLP on mine at the range and pull it through a few times if I'm there a while.

The BoreSnakes are great and I have them for all my guns, including my Remy 11-87. You still need to have a good solid rod to use with a wire brush to cleand the bore and chamber of your AR from time to time.
I used to use one similar to the bore snake 40 years ago to clean my shotgun barrels. I used a lead fishing sinker tied on to it and had the patch attached to the other end. Worked great, but nothing as nice as the Bore Snake!

Not to change the topic but I just read an article (I think it was in American Rifleman) about how so many of us over clean the bores of our guns, and how many rifles, most in fact, actually become more accurate when the bore is a little dirty.

The writer also pointed out how clean most modern propellants burn.

Just some food for thought.

I know my Henry .22 and my Marlin .17HMR shoot better when they are not clean.

That's true, especially with .22 cal rifles and pistols. Especially if you use a metal rod and wire brushes when they aren't needed. You can cause more damage with the rod, especially at the crown. Always try to push your rod thru the chamber if possible. Rifles like the M1A or Garand can be damaged with a steel rod from going in the bore unless you use a rod guide which is highly recommended. I've never over cleaned any of my barrels unless it's after shooting my 1911 with 200gr. semi wadcutters, then I do get the lead out with The Lewis Lead Remover Tool.
