This is my all time favorite bass bait. http://www.berkley-fishing.com/prod.php?k=...157&u=CPWA4The best way I have found to use it, unless you need to go real deep is to put a barrel swivel about 8-12" above the hook. Use the hook of your choice, mine is just about any model of Gamakatsu worm hook. Best hook I have used to date. Just slide the worm on and flip the hook and reinsert into worm to make it weedless. I cast it out let it sink to bottom, pull my rod tip up slowly let it drop back down. It drops to the bottom slow enough that I usually get most strikes as it is falling on the cast.

That's what I have found. I have moved totally away from heavy weighted jigs and most other jig type baits for bass unless I am fishing real deep water.

Good topic here folks!
I haven't fished for bass in a long time, but one lure that seemed to work pretty good for me was a smallish frog-type lure. I don't know who made it, but it had a double hook embedded into a molded rubber frog. It also had a small wire weed-guard on it. This puppy, when fished deep in the high grasses was a killer! It never failed.
I tried to mimic the lure with some fly-tying materials, mostly dyed deer hair, and couple of small eyes glued onto it. I soon found out that I needed to weigh it down with several wraps of lead wire covered in epoxy. I often used a 6 foot fly rod, with a short, 12 inch, 18 lb. tippet on a short 7 foot leader for this type of bass fishing. Man, talk about fun! When you hook a bass on this set-up, you're in for a good fight. Sorta like catching a Steelhead or Salmon. They'll run and play for a long time, provided you don't tire 'em out too much.
Man, I must get out the ole' flyrod, and get me a boat!

There you go, tempting me to drop everything, and load up the War Wagon with my stuff, and trek on down to ole' Virginny! I'd like to, really! But, I'm in the middle of trying to move! Perhaps sometime in the Fall, when I'm settled in. Heck, you can't be more than a few hours away from Philthy! In the meantime, catch a few for me bud! And, of course, post pics!

Topwater has to be jointed Jitterbug in frog or perch pattern. Trolling or casting plug have to be Rapala X-rap or any floating/diving Minnows. Plastics = weedless rubber worms, Texas,Carolina or weightless depending on conditions. Sometimes a Tube jig. For fast action on aggressive fish its hard to pass up medium sized spinnerbaits to locate the schools, then slow down with some plastics and have some fun.

I dont mind using the old x-rap and actually the faithfull 4" spoon. Close in to shore gotta love the various worms and spinners. Ive been fishing with my co-worker who is big into local bass tournaments and such. Bass is deffinately the most fun fish to go after in my book. Walleye tastes better but is a lot more boring!

I have fished cats as i lived on the great red river of the north for awhile, but never did catch a big one. I knew people who had caught 15-20 lbs fish but i never got into letting guts rot and then using it for bait haha. Cut bait did work when it was used though. Im guessing catching a real big cat on a real big river would be a whole different experience though.

I did that the other day with my dads light panfish setup. Makes a 8 ounce fish feel like a 5lb-er! Just so long as i am catching something makes me feel a little better. But there are always those rough days.
