Hey gents, as promised a quick report on the Barnaul .223.

First off, its cleaner than wolf I think. I only fired 60 rounds at the range this time around, but my gun looked unfired huh.gif

function was 100% of the rounds fired, all were good and the best part was the bright silver casings were easy to find in the grass for clean-up when done.

Only thing to note was how darn hot they were.

now, I have had shells from other people's guns shoot towards me and I would catch them or I've had em go down my shirt, get stuck on my neck etc...

no big deal, little burn, nothing bad...

this were friggin hot!!!

I have a burn on my neck where a shell bounced off my spotting scop came back and bounced off my neck!!!

The best part is I leaned on one with my elbow... OUCH!!! lots of dead skin and burning!!!

I went to pick the shells up after I finished the second mag, I had to wait a good 2 minutes till I could even hold them as they took so long to cool down!!! It was unreal!!!

But then I got my Addax Gas piston AR. Sure I still have to keep a few small replacement parts, but I'll let you kick me in the balls for every malfunction I have with my Addax GPU, thats how reliable it is!

So far we are at, hold on, let me check..... ZERO!

yep. thanky for the report.

I know from what you speak about hot cases.

try shooting a "Rapid Fire" string at Camp Perry, concentrating like all get out,
and have your neighbor's hot .30 cal brass go down your T-shirt under your shooting jacket!

was like something outa the Three Stooges or Simpsons.

Hooya-hiya--oucha--wowa!

all while trying to keep your cool, your muzzle pointed down range, and squeeze a good shot off!

in my opinion, Barnaul is a lot better that Wolf....I use it in my Mak and also have some in 7.62x39MM and it just shoots better period...

It'd be interesting if you could weigh some of the cases. I wonder if the brass is thinner than most and that is why they get hotter than other ammo. Might be something to consider for anyone that may plan on reloading the stuff.

Has anyone ever shot the stuff with the greenish cases? Are the cases coated with something similiar to Wolf?

Barnual is or was steel cased. Explains the heat being held and not reloadable sad.gif

I believe it is laquer coated like the old Wolf. I've shot it with no problems but only 60 or so rounds.

I agree with Neil. I always avoided the steel case stuff like the plague, but with todays modern ammo prices ...

If this stuff is truly that much cleaner than Wolf, it's worth a try. Thanks for the report.

Please do Colt.

I'm thinking I'll be ready to pick up a couple cases in a couple weeks if it's worth a darn. And it sounds like it is.

Cool deal.

sorry Janitor--I was referring to the green cased Barnaul....I couldn't see your pics at work. So far, the Barnaul lacquer coated is working well--just as long as we don't get the guns too hot and it's much more important to clean the chambers thoroughly.....good plinking ammo IMO, steel case be damned.

Well ... given that the cheapest brass cased ammo I can find goes for at least $100/k more than the Barnaul, I agree - case be damned. I can still buy new brass at around that price.

Is the green stuff really lacquer, or did they go to the 'poly' coating that Wolf did?

I have fired a fair amount of barnaul (in 556 and 762) - brown bear, silver bear, gold bear. The gold bear is my preference, only because I fear the silver bear zinc plating may be sand blasting my receiver. The brown bear runs in a 62 grain soft point that is a very interesting hunting round, but for accuracy at longer ranges. In general, quite reliable feed and function. Clearly low quality projectiles. Accuracy was very disappointing. Impression - Machine gun ammo repackaged. Great stuff for busting clays.

Brown bear and Barn Owl (Barnaul) are what I'd shoot of the Russian ammo. Silver Bear gets stuck in the chamber at times because the nickel plating is rough...
