Hey guys...this is my first post here, but I am a long time arfcommer and Glocktalker I don't post much, but have been a member in those places for years. I was referred here by some guys I play a game with called Cybernations, and was told this would be a good place to inquire.
To set this up, my wife and I are opening an Anytime Fitness in Katy, TX. It's a 24 hour facility, and we'll be living about 90 seconds away from our gym. We know we're going to get calls in the middle of the night on the 'emergency' buttons, and it will also notify 911...but the odds are, we'll be there before any first responders get there.
I know that if this happens 100 times, 99 of them will be to deal with a medical type emergency varying from minor to major, and we're fairly well equipped to deal with that with basic First Aid training and CPR and AED certifcations...I also have a pretty extensive background in sports medicine and training and dealing with the typical injuries I may find at my gym. What I am worried about is the 1 time that there could be an armed or potentially violent encounter.
What I am looking for is some training into what I can and cannot do, what I should and should not do, and then some possible tactical training on how to deal with my particular place of business, and most importantly, how to identify myself to the Authorities as a GOOD GUY, so I don't get hurt trying to do the right thing myself. I am not looking to be Barney Fife, but if a member of my gym is in trouble, I do not intend to stand idly by.
I don't mind a class with other people, but I also don't mind paying for personal f training to go over this and spend some time looking at my facility and how to deal with a possible threats around it.
Like I said, the odds of me and/or my wife ever having to do this are slim, but in the event it does...just like CPR/First Aid training...I want to be prepared.
Any leads to instructors and/or schools would be appreciated.
Thanks, Otto the Terrible

Glad you came over Otto. Neil, he has the Medical side covered. He is needing the weapon and use of information in Texas. Tigerstripe, I thought you might be able to point him in the right direction if not others.

First off, I don't know if you are planning on packing at your place of business, but I would recommend it. (Especially if you are open 24 hours and could possibly even foresee a instance to defend yourself). Check here for the state info on obtaining your CHL. You should be able to obtain the laws, regulations, and restrictions regarding concealed carry on that site as well. I teach martial arts myself, and I would recommend this type of training to everyone in some capacity. You might even consider having an instructor on staff and offering classes through your facility. I don't know of anyone that I could recommend to you in that area, but a good place to start is with one of your local LEO depts. They will sometimes have a good line on who the good instructors are offering legitimate instruction (not for sport competition). There are also plenty of good tactical schools and classes offered that cover those very things. Everything from hand to hand, pistol, rifle, and application of tactics regarding the use of all of those formats. You may find links to those things on this site as well. Other members will also have some better information on those things. As far as Texas goes, Tiger Valley is a good start. I don't know about hand to hand defensive tactics, but I believe they cover all of the others. (Ilikelegs would be able to tell you more on that one).

Thanks...Tiger Valley looks interesting.
I'll be in contact with them.
OH, and I do plan on getting my CCW soon, and probably buying a pair of Glock 23C's for my wife and I.

Thanks, Otto the Terrible Also i would reccomend taking a first responder course, or even EMT-B, gets into not just the what but the how and why as well.
