A buddy of mine (101st airborne/ranger, first sergeant) was at this hell hole in Vietnam in I am guessing here 66 or 67. He got all kinds of medals and such, But of course does not talk much about it. He has lots of health concerns, but cantankerous with most folks.
Current political and financial situation has him really pissed off at the world. He needs to have different things to talk about.
I thought maybe if I could find some written text about what occured there I could help my communication with him. Apparently their unit was nicknamed "NO SLACK"

I will try to get you some information on his unit, I do believe I had a couple of friends of mine in that area during that time. We were all out of Fort Benning, GA. back prior to your time given in your post. Many of my friends ended up in the " A Valley", many of the G.I.'s will not talk to just anybody about their time served during Nam.

You may want to take a look at the book, "Heart of a Soldier". Its about the actions in that area from 66 through 69 and covers the battle. Though written to be entertaining, it still reads like a pretty dry history really.

Ironically, I also have the DOD films from Vietnam which they did one on the battle. Its really quite hokie with enough propaganda in it to fill a boat but it does have some actual footage.

What's really funny is watching those old Army films, noticing how much BS is in them, then realizing our broadcast news these days are as full of slant as they were. sad.gif

BTW, I can't recall much other than if I recall it started as a light company was ambushed that resulted in a hilltop defense and got pretty darn hairy, but that's just from memory so don't bank on it. I wasn't there.

Having trouble getting real facts via the net, who woulda thunk. Seems the 327th infantry regiment saw action there and got a presidential unit citation, and the 101st was there also. But exact details of battles are spotty.
