I am normally a ball capper when it comes to hats, but I have been getting tired of getting sunburned on my neck and ears, plus I just wanted something a little different than just a ball cap. I also wanted something that not only blocked the sun, but if I got caught out in the rain, it would help keep it out of my face. I found the perfect hat in the
Tilley T4IS Insect Shield Hat. (Click on the pic in the link to see different shots of the hat). It has a built in insect repellant that is good for 70 washings (and the Tilleys are machine washable). The hats are crushable and packable, and you can mold them to the shape you would like. This model has a little bit bigger brim in the front and rear to provide a better shade for the eyes and to drop down over the neck. The duck canvas expands when it gets wet, so water won't permeate it in the rain. These hats are designed to be worn lower down on the head to help provide better shielding from the elements. The hats are not supposed to fit tightly, especially across the brow (forehead). If you enter your head measurement on the website, they will recommend which hat size you should order in a Tilley. Mine was perfect. If you wear the hat on a windy day, there are cords inside the hat that can be dropped down to secure the hat. One goes under the chin, the other goes around the back of the head near the base of the skull/top of the neck. It does secure the hat nicely without compromising comfort. The built in sweatband is also a nice feature.
I used mine at the range this past Saturday, and it was awesome. The hat functioned exactly as I had hoped. It was around 93F when we were there, and there is no covered shooting areas. It's right out in the middle of nowhere with no trees or shade of any kind. I was comfortable for the entire session (about 2.5 hours), and eventhough this is a full canvas hat (no mesh), it was very comfortable all day. We're starting to get mosquitos here, but I wasn't bothered by anything while I was out. (My wife wasn't so lucky.).
The Insect Shield hats are only available in one color, which is the khaki.
These are not the cheapest hats in the world, but worth every penny.
