I am thinking of getting a tactical shotgun. I am talking about somthing small and cheap that I can mount a light and maybe some luminous dot sites on.

1. Are there any particular brands I should avoid?

2. Can you typically remove a factory butt-stock and replace it with one that has a pistol grip on it?

Im not getting an $1100 dollar auto-shotty here.

Get a Mossberg 500. Inexpensive, tough as nails, and dependable. Lots of tactical furniture you can buy for it. Just be sure to check your state's laws on doing that. Some don't like you putting just a pistol grip on it.

What those guy's said.

Watch the pawn shops. I bought an 870 with some rust on it (for 60 bux) and made a project out of it.

I won't say I saved a bunch of money but I ended up with enough product (Norrell's) and stuff to tackle other projects.

Oh, and I enjoyed doing it too smile.gif . Good luck !

Aahhyess, that looks awesome. Nice work.

To the OP, I have a Mossberg 500 Persuader and I love it. It was inexpensive and has performed flawlessly.

Don't forget about the Mossberg 590 they are a sweet tactical shotgun. I have one and I love it, it has an 18" barrel, can easily be changed to a pistol grip and what I like best is it holes 8+1 2 3/4" shells.

And by the way it has a bayonet lug on it that a M7 bayonet for an m16/ar15 will fit go figure.

Remington 870. It's a shotgun even cops can't kill.

Most of the shotguns out there are pretty good guns.

The semi's are typically not used for tactical because of their limited mag capacity and due to shotgun recoil in tactical situations not considered all that much faster, shooting skeet and birds yes. In those applications the second shot is typically in the direction of the recoil.

Though I have other brands, in pumps, I typically prefer Mossberg. They are typically a little heavier so just a tad better on recoil and their thumb safety very fast once you get the hang of it. The exception to this rule of thumb is the Mossberg 590 which is the MIL version. They tend to be a little lighter but passed the MIL endurance test.

Though I converted a couple of my guns to hand grips, I actually converted back. When shooting from the hip rapid fire with magnum shells, I prefer a standard stock. For me, I find it faster (I can hold it down better) and it doesn't take my wrist out. A 12 gauge has quite the kick and is like holding down a howitzer if they are magnum shells. With a standard stock and from the hip, I can shoot quite a bit but with a hand grip after one mag of magnums I'm going "WTH happened to my wrist."

Tj

My 590 is the older MIL version with speed loader stock (holds four round which I load with slugs for distance) and has the bayonet lug.

I have heard from some of my hunter friends that the Mossbergs they owned performed terribly. Jamming like a who-da-thought it. Has that been yall's experience? I ask because they all immediantly jumped on the subject, all agreeing that they hated Mossbergs.

I don't hate Mossberg but I did have a terrible experience with one. In fact, it was the very first gun I ever owned. It was an 835 w/a 24" barrel, a turkey gun. I took it out to pattern one day and the dang thing constantly patterned a foot higher than where I was aiming. I couldn't rectify it, and I figured I might as well buy something a little nicer.

That being said, the 500 series has been kicking ass for a while now, and people swear by it. I would recommend one of the 870 shotguns over a 500, but either way you will end up happy.

I've heard the same about the Mossbergs from a guy at work. I'd never heard about it before, but ever since he told me his bad experience, seems I run across another one now and again. Could just be bad luck, I know lots of people that highly recommend them. Personally I like the Remington 870 Marine Magnum. The silver accents the black nicely imo, and it'll prolly be the first one I buy, if I can find one reasonably priced. I wish I was rich and could afford a Benelli M4, but I cant see spending $1600 on a shotgun. Maybe later in life...lol.

im gonna give you my 2 cents with shotguns...

if i were going to get a tactical shotgun this is what i would look into:

ithaca m37
remington 870

ithaca m37
make sure you get the old ithaca's. they are solid as all hell. plus they are slam fire. hold the trigger down and pump. also they are bottom ejecting. the downside is some people dont like not being able to load 1 in the breach sliding the forearm foawrd and being able to go. this you actucally have to load up the magazine, pump one cycle to get it going...doesnt bother me because the bottome ejecting shotguns load so fast.

remington 870 tac or police
if you really want that tactical look get a remmy 870. they are smoother than a mossberg and as long as you get an 870, not an 870 express its a much better build. the mossberg 590a1 is not the same as a mossberg 500.

dont get fooled by contracts and what agency uses what.

so the nypd and military uses mossberg...ask any military man how many times the shotguns were used in service. my friends been in the marines for years in combat and has yet to see a benelli.

remington 870 or ithaca is def the way to go.
