Teen may lose arm after snakebite at school
Poisonous copperhead snake was brought to school by fellow student

POTTSTOWN, Pa. - A 14-year-old girl may lose her arm after being bitten by a poisonous copperhead snake at school, authorities said.

The snake was caught in Valley Forge by a 17-year-old male student, who took it in a shoebox to a drama club gathering at St. Pius X High School on Friday, Lower Pottsgrove Police Chief Ray Bechtel said. No regular classes were held that day, which was designated for staff development.

The boy was showing the reptile to other students when it bit the girl’s finger, Bechtel said.

The girl, whose name was not released by police, apparently threw the snake across the room and the boy threw it outside. The snake was not found, but authorities were able to identify it because the boy photographed it with his camera cellphone, said Bechtel.

Just in time
The victim was treated at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center about 45 minutes after being bitten, he said.

“The doctors said if it had been a half-hour longer she would likely have been dead,” said Bechtel.

However, police said she could still lose her arm.

Police did not have an update on the girl’s condition Sunday. She had been in very serious condition at Hershey Medical Center.

No charges were filed but police said they were investigating.

Copperhead snake bites are typically not fatal but are extremely painful and may cause extensive scarring and loss of limb use, according to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension of North Carolina State University.

I just read about that, that kid needs his ass kicked for catching the snake first off, then bringing it to school. blink.gif
I bet he will be charged with wanton endangerment or maybe reckless attempted murder for bringing a poisonous snake like that a school.

I'll have to show this to my dad. He was almost killed by a copperhead when he was a boy. Got bit on the ankle and since they lived in BFE it took forever to get to the hospital. Once he got there he had an alergic reaction to the anti-venom. damn near killed him.

When I was taking High School Biology my teacher told us of a student that brought a Coral snake to school in a cigar box. As probably many of you don’t know a Coral snake is a viper or a neural toxin venomous snake. When she walked into the class the students were passing the snake around in their hands. One bite would have meant death. The rest of our snakes are chemo-toxin snakes. The Coral is as deadly as the King Cobra. Fortunately for the kids the Coral has a small mouth and the fangs are located in the rear of the mouth. Anti-venom is not usually available.

I'm really not a fan of ANY snakes. any snake I come across is a dead snake unless I can safely back away from it without leaving it on my property.

The only snake that would get a free pass like that is a Black Snake, all others die by the lead poison.

Cy feed a little poison to one, exactly what they all deserve.

Snakes have a very short life expectancy around me.

Yeah I hate Coral snakes also --- this is half of one I killed.

Sister in law said it was the biggest they have ever seen

32 inches .......... that is huge for a Coral snake.

Most snakes are man’s best friend. I’ll admit I would kill a poisonous snake but I would never kill the vast majority of snakes that are non-poisonous to man. They do a fantastic job keeping the vermin population down. I’ve never heard of a flea living on a snake and transmitting a disease to man…

While I'll agree with you about most snakes being more of a help than a threat, I guess I just don't know enough about them. I wish I could identify them better and then I would leave the good ones alone. I guess luckily for me around here there is not MUCH for me to be worried about.

Well then you should be happy that that Coral snake was killed --- because the main diet of Coral snakes is other snakes ... good snakes that eat rodents . .
