I have to say I'm a bit steamed. About a month ago I spotted a S&W 1026 on Gunbroker with a 'buy it now' price of $400. I jumped on it, had my local gun shop fax out their FFL and put a money order in the mail. About two weeks went by without hearing a word from the seller and every day I stopped by the gun store they would tell me, "Not yet." I emailed and called the seller (a pawn shop) numerous times, but kept getting the run around. It had supposedly been shipped, but they couldn't give me a date or a tracking number. Finally a few days ago, after threatening legal action, they finally give me the info I asked for. They actually did ship it within a week of me sending out the money order and it was signed for at my local shop. I print up a copy of the UPS tracking info and take it in to show them. Turns out the day it showed up both the regular guys at the gun counter were both out hunting and so the person covering put it up behind the rack with the rifles, but never told anyone it had arrived. Now they can't find it! The manager was very apologetic and has stated that he'll cover my costs if it doesn't turn up by Monday, but I'm still out a 1026 at a sweet price! ARGH!!!

If they can't find it perhaps a police report should be filed.

If they can't find it, I'd ask the ATF to take a look at their bound book. I'll bet that they saw what it was, and probably knew what you paid for it. Someone thought, "$400 for a 1076? I've got an idea...." Soon, your sweet deal was now their sweet deal.

My thoughts exactly. If we are to be held to ATF regs, we may as well use them to keep certain dealers in line. Criminal dealers give the thousands of good guys a black eye.

I looked at their disposition book and it was never logged in during the three weeks since it had been delivered. I have done business with the two regular guys numerous times and don't think they would screw me over, but if it had just been sitting somewhere for a couple of days I wouldn't be surprised if one of the other store workers decided it was a good opportunity for an 'employee discount.'

I see that you're in Oregon. What's the name of the dealer? If you want, PM it to me. I know a few things other people don't about a few places.

They found it!

The head guy at the gun counter came back from vacation today and knew right where it was. Yes, I'm pissed that it was 'lost' in the first place, but I'm just relieved that the gun was located and I didn't miss out on a long waited for sweet deal on a hard to find gun. The guy was very apologetic and waived the transfer fee which was a nice gesture.

Out of all my 10xx series guns this is by far the roughest one. Quite a bit of holster wear and the trigger isn't as crisp as I'd like. Still, for $400 I can't complain. Right now I'm debating on whether to send it back to S&W for a tune-up and refinishing, or just leave it as is and make it my new truck gun.

Nordic: glad to read they found it and now it's in your hands.

By the way, there's nothing wrong with using it as a plain-jane 10mm "truck gun."

Wish I had a "truck gun" -- hell, wish I had a truck!

Good deal on that -- it's a nice gun for the money, and you can't beat the 10mm for knock down power.

Nordic, I'm glad everything's appeared to work out on your "deal". After going through all that hassle, I would definitely send it back to S&W for a tune-up and cosmetic refinish. This is after-all is a "hard-to-acquire" item, and should reflect the value, that you personally give it. This is just my personal opinion. Let us know how it shoots, when you take her out to play.

Have it 'cleaned up' and returned to as much of it's original appearance/status as possible! For a relatively rare piece such as this, it would be worthe the expense. You'll never regret it.

Glad you got it back. Your collecting bug gave me the 10mm collecting bug years ago looking at the pictures you used to post.

While the 10mm sure has the needed power, I am wondering why you want to shoot trucks. really.gif
