When I traded for my AR57, the guy mentioned to take an old GI mag and trim it below the receiver and it will hold all the 50 rounds of spent brass.

This got me thinking. Im making my pistol two tone FDE and Black with magpul all around. What better mag to use than a FDE Pmag. It took me a night of thinking, pdog1517 taughting me and VTD and Noneya encouraging me along to work up the nerve to chop a pmag.

Well here is how it went.

First two picts show the whole pmag and how far up it rides. To high to close the upper/lower and runs into the operation of the bolt.



Next I took a pin and traced around where the top of the lower meets the mag.


I cut about 1/4 inch below the line to give more than enough clearance as to not screw with bolt operation. I sanded it flush after cutting to look good and cleaned up any burs with a hand file. Cleaned it with soap and water to get rid of any bits and pieces.




Here is the mag after being cleaned up and inserted in the lower.






And here she is all put back together.

Suggestion.

Cut off the bottom as well. Go find a small color matched canvas or nylon bag and glue it to the bottom. An AR57 has a 50rnd mag. That will fill up your Pmag fast with brass since it obviously won't fall in there neatly and aligned. There will also likely be a bit of bounce to the brass as it fills up. The small bag at the bottom will increase capacity and deaden the fall a bit to reduce bounce.

Or make one of each. One like what you have already for visual aesthetics and convenience when you move with the gun shooting. Then the bagged version for the range bench. Wouldn't even need to use one of your better mags for it either. Just cut down your least desired mag or a broken one and fit and sturdy small bag to it just for the range usage.

What work is taking the PS90 brass catcher and mounting it to the bottom of the mag to avoid bounce back. Also the PS90 brass catcher has a coin purse bottom making it even easier to empty out the brass.

I bet attaching a PMAG top to a SAW bag would work very well.

You'd just have to do a little cutting & epoxying.

It'd end up looking like a shrike lower.

That would work. SAW bag would hold several 50 mags worth of brass. Cheap to grab at a gun show or order a surplus one for a buck from New River Salvage.

I was thinking more along the lines of the 100rd assault bags with zippers on the bottom.

I have a real one from an M249 sitting right here that I'm looking at.

The hanger attachment point could be taken right off with a bandsaw so the top is flush. You could then dremel a rectangular cut in the top the same size as the pmag body. Then cut most of the bottom half off the pmag, turning it into a feed tower. Then epoxy the two together.

I bet it would hold two mags worth of brass. It also can be emptied easily via the zipper.

The original feed chute could be left intact. There's a piece of steel in there to keep tension on the belts that would stop any empties from popping out.

Man....now I'm wishing I had an AR57 upper so I'd have a reason to chop this PMAG thats sitting right next to the SAW bag!

Trade me your PS90 and we have a deal.

Ive actually been thinking about trading off my pistol upper and going with a full length upper so I have have a rifle instead. Pistol is cool, but a b**** to shoot.

I won't do that but if I find some free time I might just make you a higher capacity brass catcher ;)
