When shooting an iron sighted rifle what sight picture do you prefer?
The 3 most common I am familiar with is
1-the six o'clock hold (dotting the I)
2-the center of mass hold (front post centered on target)
3-the 'flat tire' sort of inbetween 1 and 2

I always held on center of mass when shooting irons but when I started shooting long range with irons I had to switch to the six o'clock hold in order to see the target at extended range. I know shoot all targets with this style.
Which do you prefer and why?

I "dot the I" with all my irons. Like you said, it gives a much better sight picture.

"dot the I" with all arms being handgun or rifle. I have even done it with the fiberoptic sights on my bow. I get used to aiming one way and dont have to think about range, weapon or anything else. Consistancy is the name of the game.

To me, dotting the eye is great for shooting at black circles, but it kicks me in the butt when in the woods. On a 200 yard NRA target my bullet is hitting about 9 inches higher than where my front post is sitting, in order to hit the x-ring. That messes me up in the woods when the illusion of target size at a given distance is in question. "Is that deer's body 18-inches tall from chest to back or is that deer small? How low do I have to put the front post to get a bullet in his heart?" In the heat of the moment it's kind of confusing. So I like the center hold method. That way I only have to know the distance. Now I just have to line that front sight up with where I want the point of impact to be. It's just way simpler for me to use that in situations where the sized of the "aiming black" is not known.

I shoot center mass, with both my AR and handguns. I'd have to try the others to see how I like them, but center mass seems to work best for me.

I got used to shooting with the 6 o'clock style with the pistol so I do the same with the rifle. I have tried the others but I get a much better picture with this method than others.

My G19 & my rifles are setup to Dot the I. My Colt 1911 shoots low this way {fixed sight}, but
I don't use it as a carry piece.

For game animals I do the center mass, POA equal POI. I don't have time to figure what is a 6" hold under when I am out shooting for meat. I'll use 6 o'clock on Bullseye and High Power.
