The only reason an officer has the right to search your car without a search warrant is if the violation is in plain sight, therefore giving him probable cause that a law is being committed. Other than that, he must either have a search warrant or your consent. Sure, they'll ask all the time. Someone earlier commented about being on a "fishing trip." Isn't that a cop's job - to find the stuff! However, most people don't realize that civilians have the RIGHT to refuse their search. Don't give them access to your goodies unless you absolutely have to, and even then, ordinary K-9 dogs aren't capable of sniffing weapons,
