Most of us who prepare for emergencies have put a lot of thought into what has to be done in order to be as ready as we can be for a given scenario. We've all seen the equipment/BoB threads and discussions where we discuss and debate our choices in gear and preferred methods of getting things done.

I'd like to take that discussion in a slightly different direction and discuss why we do the things we do. I'd like to know what makes you tick-why do you do the things you do? Why do you prepare?

For me it's very simple-my wife and daughter are my whole world. On a psychological level it's probably unhealthy to be so single-minded, but ultimately I don't care. My "girls" are the reason I get up in the morning, the reason I grit my teeth and work despite a severed achilles tendon, and the reason I have a layered emergency plan to keep them safe in as many scenarios as I can realistically envision and prepare for.

In a sense my need to provide for them could be considered selfish. My love for them and need to keep them safe revolves around a profound fear of failing them, and ultimately losing them. I wouldn't want to face life without them at my side.

That's why I do the things I do. How about you?

I am with you. We would have our cellular phones, but in a true SHTF scenario they would be useless to us. I would be away from the house so the landline would be a no go.

We have 6 FRS radios, but keeping batteries in them would pose the problem. I have found however they hold a charge for a hell of a long time if used sparingly. I would not be worried MUCH about communicating with the outside world.

For sure, one of the worst days of my life was being at work when a tornado hit my area. The news broadcast had a track right for my house. The land phone lines were down and the cell phone exchanges jammed with phone calls. I had no way to insure my family knew it was coming.

I hop in my car and try to make it home in time. Big mistake, I was immediately caught in traffic gridlock the whole time hitting that damn redial button. Well I found out my family was OK the hardway as the twister cut right across my commute path taking a telephone pole out landing on a pickup in front of me. I actually pulled the guy out of his truck that day.

When I finally made it home. I found my family snug a rug in the basement watching the whole thing on TV. All that situational awareness and what to do ifs actually paid off.
