Hey everyone, was just wondering if I can get some feedback as to which 62gr Penetrator ammunition you find most dependable and/or accurate....I am not concerned with "pretty" ammunition as I have fired bulk ammo most of the time.....some dents in the casing does not make that round go downrange way off target....there are 3 M4's and a mini-14 in the family.....so will need something available in bulk if possible........ flea.gif

anim_lolabove.gif I'm with Mark. Until DU comes on the market I'll stick with 7.62x63 M-1 AP. Besides some of my best groups with my M-1 were with AP. bigsmile.gif
Now that I think about it the AR will be good for lots of targets. The M-1 is for target that really need to be hurt. And hurt first try.

OK everyone, what I am gathering is that ther LC M855/SS109 is the best route since the depleted uranium is not an option, and if it were it would be cost inhibitive 32.gif

You can get your hands on tungsten core if you hurry and are willing to pay through the nose. Obviously you will not be able to get hundreds but you could get enough for a couple mags for the day the unthinkable happens.

Double Tap, one of our site sponsors has SS109 ( the same SS109 FMJ-BT steel penetrater projectile that our military uses) here:

Hey......I just received 2 boxes of the DT SS109....be hitting the range tomorrow....is I like it will be getting more, from what I have heard from you and others its Top rate ammo....I just ordered 500 rounds LC M855......it is 5.56, so the mini-14 wont fire it, the Ruger is .223 only...so I figure will probably stock up on DT for the mini-14.... flea.gif

i thought m855 was nato spec/5.56 and ss109 was the 223 flavor. as for which is good stuff, i completely destroyed my girls plinking target with some prvi m855. punched pencil sized holes clean through the 1/4 inch plate steel and darn near cut it in half at the pivot point.

The ss109 is the original NATO designation and the M855 is the US military designation. For example, the Canadians call their ss109 the C77 in their military designation. It's 5.56 NATO just like the US M855. Only difference is the fact it is made in Canada and doesn't have a green tip. Otherwise it would load and fire just like the M855 in a US M4.

Thanks for the info....is reason I am buying Double Tap SS109 for the mini-14....since it only chambers/fires .223 thumb.gif

Bad idea. The original SS109 designation is 5.56 NATO as I just said above. At 62 grains it could blow out a .223 chamber fast.

Unless the ammo plainly states "made to .223 Saami specs" it should never go into a Mini-14.

Contact DT directly and fast if you already have your order in. Explain that your rifle is .223 only and cannot take 5.56 NATO. Get their assurance of what spec they used.

Unless he has a really old Mini-14, it will shoot 5.56. The manual will say .223(5.56) like they are the same instead of stating it will handle both .223 Remington and 5.56mm Nato.

That's what the receiver says, but it's rated for 5.56. RTFM, says it in black and white thumb.gif I use 5.56 in my Mini, no problems.
