Good evening all. I recently purchased a DPMS with an A2 upper. It has the dual flip up sights (just the standard ones) for 100 and 300 yards. I have tried to do some research, but I cannot find any information anywhere on what the sight radius is supposed to be for each sight setting. I'm thinking in terms of the old rings around the Mosin Nagant rifle front sights that are (supposed) to be within 6" at 100 yards. Is there any data to see what kind of pattern I can expect with the standard flip up sights on the A2 upper? Thanks! flea.gif

Standard A2 rear sight apperture diameter is .260 inch, and 0.10 inch.

Sight radius actually refers to the distance between front and rear sight. I don't know the exact figures.

I also do not know the exact figures on how large an area the standard front sight blade or standard appertures subtend at 100 yds.

I can tell you that the A2 rifle is fully capable of getting 1.5-2" groups with the standard small apperture at 100yds if you are lining the sights up right and the rifle is well aimed and fired.

using a Mosin front sight ring to cover 6 inches at 100 yds doesn't sound like the best aiming method ,but could be useful for impromptu range finding ability.

Acutally the sight radius is rather fixed for a given barrel length, or in case of an AR, distance to gas block, unless you have a full or extended rail or other means of mounting a front sight. The longer the sight radius there is less error to be induced into the sighting process. That's why in some types of competition where any configuration of rifle goes, the sights are clamped onto a special mount right at the muzzle.

With the flip up aperatures, the small is for longer range and the center of it will be a little higher to compensate for the longer range vs the larger aperature which is for closer ranges.

The large 0-2 should only be used during low light conditions and up close. At 200, you might as well just point the rifle and shoot.

The big vs small apertures was always a bone of condition at the prison that I retired from. We use 9 MM CAR's on the SORT (SWAT) team never shooting past 75 yards and I could never get the guys to understand "down and dirty" for speed in a leathal situation. they wanted to Dan'l Boone them all the time.

On my regular qualifications with the other prison employees we shot 50 yards on man sized targets. The use of the small aperture was universal as the rifles were sighted in for the troops prior to their qualifications by some of the "better" shooters. Mots of our people couldn't hit a 200 yard man target if you paid them $1000 a hit on a bet. Everyone "knows" that is to far to shoot with those ratty old AR's!!

I just built a new CAR with the A2 sights and am learning about them slowly but have decided that I will probably go with the small aperture for most uses and if it gets real personal the big one is going to be "reference" material anyway. Point and shoot out to about 50 yards is not hard but if the light fades that big hole sure helps get the bullets on target.
