Law enforcement officers are mourning the death of a Chambers County Sheriff's deputy, killed in the line of duty.
31 year old Shane Detweiler died today, while responding to a shooting this morning near Mont Belvieu.
He had only been with the sheriff's department for 2 months.
Before that, he was a game warden in Chambers County and a decorated veteran of the Iraq war.
Detweiller leaves behind a wife and 3 young children.
The shooting happened just after 9:30 this morning just East of Mont Belvieu on FM 565.
Investigators say a meter reader arrived at the trailer to shut off the water, when she says a woman stepped outside the trailer fired at her.
The meter reader wasn't hit and managed to get to a neighbor's house and called the Chamber's County Sheriff's Office.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Detweiler and a State Trooper responded to the call.
Investigators say the woman's boyfriend shot and killed Detweiler as he walked up to the home, trying to arrest the woman.
Detweiler was hit in the head and died at the scene.
DPS says the suspect then barricaded himself inside the home.
The 10 hour SWAT standoff ended this evening, when police entered and found the suspect dead.
He's been identified as Gilbert Ortez, Junior.
Police say he was a former reserve police officer from Kenefick, a small town in Liberty County.
At this time, it's not known if Ortez shot himself in his bedroom or if he had been hit by one of the officer's bullets.
