I have been planning to leave California for a long time and right now, I have been giving strongest consideration to Nevada since I have allot of family there. But I am starting to give Alaska some consideration now. Mainly because I spent part of my childhood there and loved it more then any other place. The thing is, I haven't been there since 1987 and I have heard that it changed allot, almost entirely in negative ways.

If I were to move there, it would be to settle remotely and try to live off the land as much as possible, sparing for just basic utilities (water, electric, phone etc.

I lived in the Kenai peninsula, so that's where I will return if I DO end up moving there. So tell me. What is it like there today, and is this sort of life practical?

Oh, and don't worry about me if I do move there. I promise I won't be another California numb skull.

BTW.

I just found a great 9 acre spot near Anchor Point for $10,000. I love that area. I just might have to jump on it, if I can come up with the $ for it.

I may have to swipe that if you don't go for it. I'm looking at going back after I graduate in may. Where's the property at?

If you do buy it, I'll buy you a beer at the inn when our paths cross. thumb.gif

I don't drink, and can't stand the taste of beer.

I am always up for a shooting trip though. If I buy property out there, I am going to look in to making my own underground firing range.

Just curious as to what the perception of Alaska is to you lower 48 people, Its very interesting. Is Alaska really that weird to people in the lower 48? I mean, That one guy asked what we do for work LOL... I guess since I've lived here my whole life I don't know anything different. I've only really been on Military posts in the lower 48, And they're all the same. To me, Alaska seems like the easiest place to live, Yet everyone else is astonished we survive... Whats up with that? Lol. Again, I'm not trying to make fun of anyone, I just find the whole idea of Alaska from your point of view interesting.

I'm the wrong person to ask. I lived in Alaska back in the 80s, so I have some concept for what it's like, but I also know it was allot more wild back then then it is today. It still wasn't that bad.

Well then, in lieu of beer, how does some ammo sound? wink.gif

There are allot of little things that make Alaska (at least the southern part) an easy place to live, which no one knows about. For instance, very few people outside the state know that strawberries, raspberries and sweet peas grow wild out there. Even in Alaska, there are allot of people who (at least when I was there) don't know that fiddle heads (un-bloomed ferns) and sour dock are edible.

There's also allot of other natural resources that make life in Alaska easier, which are either in little or no supply in many parts of the lower 48.
