I'm thinking about purchasing a Mosin Nagant from a local shop selling them for 130$ with all original accessories, I'm mainly going to use it for hunting and was just wanting some opinions on it. I've never heard anything bad, and know they have a decent following. Just wondering about the rifle and cartridge. I was also thinking it would be nice to have another rifle with readily available mil-surp.

Which model is it? The M38 and 91/30 are my favorites. The M44 can be a bit of a PITA with the bayonet changing point of impact. The $130 might be a touch high, but then again, I haven't kept up with the prices lately. My M38 is my favorite go-to beater rifle, it shoots much better than it has any right to, and it's built like a tank.

I think it's a 91/30, I'll have to go back and check later this week. I also can't remember if they said they were used or old new rifles......

VTD should be chiming in shortly. IIRC, just about anything you get is going to be used, though it may be an arsenal rework. Those aren't bad, they've been cleaned up, reblued, rebarrelled if needed, and generally put back in fighting shape. "Used" isn't bad either, just make sure to look at the bore carefully. Sometimes people aren't careful about cleaning after using corrosive ammo, and you could wind up with a dark or pitted bore. Make sure it looks good before you buy.

BTW, the 91/30 is going to be the looooooong infantry rifle. The M38 is a carbine. Mine is a quick handling little rifle, and while it kicks a bit more, it is a hoot.

If I remember correctly these were in about a 4-5 foot long crate so pretty sure it must be the 91/30 then. The outside condition looked great, but I'll be sure to check the bore with a flashlight before purchase. Thanks bigsmile.gif

These all range in quality/price. I picked one up (M44) on sale at Big5 not too long ago for $79 plus fees. Awesome rifle. Shoots better than I would have ever imagined and ammo is readily available. You can even find some pretty good non-corrosive stuff if you don't like cleaning with windex. To echo most other comments, check the bore. I had to go through a couple of these at the counter before making the decision. If you can find one with matching serial numbers on the reciever, bolt, barrel, even better. Most of these will be franken guns, mine happened to match on the bolt and barrel which I never checked until I read about this factoid somewhere. I wouldn't say the M44 is a precision rifle but it can take out gallon jugs at 300 meters consistently. There are some aftermrket stocks and LER scopes that make these into some great hunting rifles. No matter what, you are not going to get a better, more fun firearm for the price. Even if you never use it to hunt, it will still bring many rounds of joy to your life. Enjoy!!

I love my 91/30 and would not want to shoot a Mosin that's any shorter or lighter than mine, these things have some decent felt recoil. Mine is more accurate than I ever would have expected. I plan on reloading for mine with some hunting bullets and target bullets and can't wait to see what it can do.
These are an inexpensive class of older Military firearm that are cheap to shoot and fun as well, heck ALL guns are cool to shoot.

It does sound a little high- Southern Ohio Gun has them for $70 to $90 (plus shipping.) You need an FFL (the C&R (curio and relic)) is good for rifles like this.
