Last Recruit Sustainment Drill they combined class with chow, on how to eat an MRE.

They are better than I thought, much better, I keep thinking about MREs now and I want another.

I had beef patty, added a pack of bbq sauce, traded cheese spread for jelly, had 2 snack breads, nacho cheese pretzels, grape drink mix, and traded my box of mexican style mac and cheese for a cinnamon scone.

What do they put in those that make everything so good? oh yea.gif

(however, it is probably best I traded my chicken with noodles package for the beef patty package, and someone got a package of clamchowder blink.gif )

Wow, I somehow remember those.....I think. Can't remember if if it was C-rats or elsewhere. I know I liked them. Wherever I had them I do remember them being tasty.

Found a cool info site on MRE's. Covers even the international ones. Always remember the Brits and FFL having great field meals.

http://www.mreinfo.com/

OMG Russian Rats? I don't even want to think about it! Hey Zeke do you remember how many Cals in K-rats(winter issue) wasn't it like 3800 per meal or more? The thing I remember about the British Royal Marines was the "Hot & Wet"NOT WHAT YOUR THINKING, It's TEA! those guys would drink it all day, when they couldn't get beer! I went thru Arctic Training with them and they would carry thermos flask of the stuff all the time. Pretty handy when it's 20-30 below.

Something like 3500-4000 per winter ration. Still are with the MCW/LRP rat they issue now.

When they first came out, the MRE were downright disgusting. You had to learn to mix and match ingredients. The beef in barbeque sauce was the favorite, but the beef in brown gravy sucked. The trick is to trade the BBQ for the gravy and a bunch of extras like the john wayne bar, extra coffe and cocoa and whatever else you could con some one out of. Then, you sneak away, open the beef in gravy and take the little ketchup packet and mix that in. Voila, instant beef in bbq. (tasted identical)

I really miss the C-rats. Nothing like dropping the the can in the exhaust manifold, driving to wherever and having a nice hot meal when you got there. They were damn heavy though. I think like 4 or 5 pounds each. I even remember when they put little packs of cigarettes in them.

Liked to eat 'em. But I had to hump them things all over God's creation. The only thing to warm 'em up was the sweat off my butt! Every time I'd get some good heat off the fuel tabs, we'd have to pack up and move. Didn't have a warm cup 'o Joe for 4 years in the field, most times we would suck on the coffee crystals like chaw!

LMAO! Ate plenty of coffee crystals in my day. Then the little salt packet went into one canteen and the sugar packet into the other.

Drink packets were always saved until you were drinking ground water with the iodine pills in them.

B menu boxes were always the last ones to empty.

As far as modern MRE's are concerned, CHILI MAC is by far the best tasting. Anyone ever make the malted milk ball candy with the sugar packet and creamer packet? Just wondering. unsure.gif

I have about 8 or 9 assorted MRE's. I keep them for hunting trips. I don't think I could call them great though. I did manage to eat quite a few C rations in the '60. Used to look forward to the little pack of 4 cigarettes:)

Never had the Chili Mac(I'm and old Fart)but it sounds tasty.I don't know about the jail house Malted milk balls? I would take about 10 cans of Sardines or tuna fish for my pogey bait and eat them with the crackers & cheese. After those ran out , I'd Rat-Fu@! out the rest in trades. I lived on them crackers!

I actually liked the old sawdust-looking bar they had in the late 80's/early 90's. They were easy to get too because not many other folks wanted anything to do with them.
