I just noticed this posted on the TFA website. So far the reports are comeing from Cheatham county but it may also be happeneing in Davidson. Are you guys in other parts of the state hearing anything about this?

QUOTE
We have had a report this date of local government codes inspectors going to houses asking whether the individual has black powder and/or smokeless. If the individual indicates that they do, then the local inspectors want to know how much and to inspect the storage. Apparently, the local governments have and/or are adding limits on the amount of black powder and smokeless powder that can be stored at an individual, non-commercial residence.

The building code does say how much ammo/fireworks/gunpowder and such you can safely store in your home before going to flammable lockers, signs on the home and such.

It's been a few years since I've conducted building inspections for life safety items (fire alarms, sprinklers/extinguishers and such) but the code does exist and depending on local laws/ordinances & such you can be inspected in your home.....

IIRC probable cause or a warrant does not apply to a Fire Marshall/Code inspector because they are not investigating the commission of a crime but the compliance with building/fire safety codes. I know in IL it is damn near impossible to find real black powder because the codes on storing it require a fireproof/blastproof cabinet for storing more than 5 pounds whether in a commercial setting or residential. Being on both sides of the issue I can see it from both sides, there is nothing fun about fighting a fire when you know there is a boatload of ammo or powder around but it isn't like fighting a fire is fun anyway and people keep far more dangerous stuff inside their homes anyway, propane tanks for 1. On the other side, it isn't that big a deal to have powder around either.

Depends on your local laws, if you are building a deck on your home & need a permit & the building inspector comes out & sees a HUGE ammo fort he can call the fire inspector and have them inspect your home for life safety code violations. Seems like there are two (2) different sets of building codes & it all depends on your state/city/town and what they have adopted.

I never inspected a private home, but did all kinds of businesses, churches & other public areas when remodeling & upgrading as they were required when pulling a permit. In lots of ways it's a scam, but there is good solid reasons behind em. Was a private contractor, had no legal authority but worked with the business owner and local fire inspector to ensure code compliance.

You could just tell them, "No". It's not illegal to lie to a fireman.

Why would I own something dangerous like that. I only keep enough ammo for target shooting and hunting. A little less than a full box. Maybe enough to reload twice. :shrugging:

Well, thank you, it is nice to know the years of training have done something good. Propane tanks scare me a lot more than ammo or powder do, propane can and will go boom and always at the least opportune time. We had a fire once upon a time where the homeowner had a 20# cylinder inside. We got the fire out and the cylinder let go on its pressure relief valve. Instant ball of flame, the house was gone in a matter of minutes, the heat from the burning propane kept us from getting back in and stopping it or cooling it down. By the time the tank ran out of gas every room was on fire. Another dept close to us had a fire in a 2 story house with a basement, it was primarily contained to the first floor. When they vented the basement window the window block fell into the basement and ruptured the copper line going outside to the 1000# propane tank in the yard. Propane being heavier than air it settled to the floor where it was out of reach of the fire on the first floor. The door to the basement was closed and when they were overhauling the stairwell a flaming piece of wood fell down the stairs and landed right at the door, the flame set off the basement full of propane and lifted the entire house off its foundation. Amazingly none of the FF were hurt but again the house was a total loss.

Well technically it is. But if you get things set up then when the look they will find nothing.
According to some rumors some guy has a safe no one came find in his basement. Almost big enough to park a 78 impala in with room to walk around the car.
But then again the building inspectors and electrical and plumbing guys never saw it.
Well how can something exist that's not there.
