X stands for experimental and excess. These are rounds considered just outside of cosmetic milspec. Nothing wrong with them though the military doesn't think they are pretty enough.

Unfortunately other manufacturers have grabbed the designation that was supposed to be for US suppliers, namely Federal and Olin (Winchester). Many countries make true M193 and M855, but the XM--- was just for us to use domestically for civilian resale. Olin didn't even bother using it and went with Q3131 instead. So if it's XM--- and not Federal then it's just something slapped on to sell by familiarity. Doesn't mean the ammo is bad, like with Centurian, but it's not true XM--- ammo.

The M just stands for Military issue. M1A1 Abrams, M16, M79, etc.

I think the OP wants to know about the letters after XM193, for instance XM193C.

Personally, I don't know.

I don't know for sure but I think they are overruns of contracts with countries and/or federal agencies. My reasoning is that there is/was XM193CBP stands for Customs and Border Protection.

I found some more (possibly good) info:

XM193BK is bulk, overrun.

XM193C is commercial (packaging)

XM193AF may be Air Force for Air Guard units who still shoot M193 ammo.
