I went outside to clean a trigger housing for an M1 carbine. I thought it would tsake 10 minutes or so. Cripes! An hour later, sitting in the 90 degree blazing south Florida sun, and cosmoline is everywhere. What friggin mess. It's clean now, but yucko.

G--next time, try this: put a pot of water on to boil. Drop part covered in offending cosmoline into pot. Skim the crud off the top with a paper towel.
dry and oil clean, cosmoline free parts.

A long time ago. Somebody that was dipping the parts in cosmoline was saying " I hate to be the poor SOB that has to clean this off"

QUOTE (hsracer201 @ May 24th 2008 2:54 PM) yes he is. young'un....he was referring to YOU! Anyone who's married knows not to put gun parts in the oven because of the smell! The boiling water method doesn't stink like the oven method does so G should be safe.

I find gasoline to work wonders. It clkeans the part, and the smell is so offensive that my wife doesn't come near me.

no elbow grease required. I can testify that this works well. I've pulled the action out of the stock, and just poured boiling water over the whole mess as it sits in a bucket. Anything the boiling water doesn't remove, brake cleaner will. Re-oil, and you're good to go.

I thought you just soaked the offending parts in mineral spirits and then took a tooth brush to 'em.

QUOTE (Bitter Monk @ May 25th 2008 10:50 PM) I thought you just soaked the offending parts in mineral spirits and then took a tooth brush to 'em. nah....that takes too much effort. I'm lazy Why scrub when you can just plunk it into a pot and let heat and chemistry do all the work instead? When the cosmo heats up, it floats to the top of the water.....remove the parts, and they're hot enough to air dry before any rust can set in....then just spray with CLP. Sometimes, lazy is good

I just soak it in diesel fuel, swirl it around a couple times and it runs off. Next time I'll try the boiling water trick

I thought this was covered earlier. http://www.amazon.com/Euro-Pro-SC014-Mini-...r/dp/B000069BFFNot the brand that I have but, along the same lines. Clean parts and pull dents out of stocks. For that matter you might want to use it around the house.

I run a farm diesel repair shop. I just use the solvent tank and compressed air. Clean like any other nasty greasy parts.

I have developed a product called Ultra Gun Clean that will remove anything on the gun including cosmoline, carbon, dirt, grease anything you can throw at it. We are in the final stages of marketing this product and it does work best in an ultrasonic bath, but without is fine. I use it in a small ultrasonic tank for my handguns with excellent results.
PM me if interested.
