Thought the beginners forum would be appropriate for the first post, as I am new to the AR-15 and riffles in general.
I've been a handgun guy for some time but decided to acquire the first riffle. Love the AR-15 and it's versatility.
Don't know zoo but I'm learning. On a budget I started with a DPMS lower and an ACE stock. Would have preferred an adjustable stock
but this state has restrictions; stock must be non adjustable, no bayonet lug, no flash hiders. No restrictions on magazine
capacity, (yet). Next was a DPMS 16" light upper with a quad rail. A stock DPMS detachable rear sight, Tapco foregrip, YHM
muzzle brake (permanently attached) and some Magpul magazines. Plan to add a 3 x 9 x 40 scope as soon as funds allow.
Main use (for now) will be targets a 50-100 yards and 200 yards when I'm up to the hike out to it.
Here is what it looks like:

I'm interested in feed back from others regarding the DPMS products, good bad, or otherwise.
Hope to get out to the range soon to test fire and try my hand at setting the sights.
I've read a lot of differing opinions regarding breaking in and not sure if I want to fire, clean, fire for 25 rounds and then 10
until 100 or just fire 10, clean, fire and clean when done for the day. I don't think the barrel is chrome lined is there a way to tell?
Look forward to discussing the black riffles here.

Welcome to the asylum! We've all been diagnosed with BRD, it seems to be highly contagious.

Nice rifle, and good choice with DPMS. Good product, good service. Hard combination to beat.

First, welcome.gif to the Armory! Lots of great guys here that will love to help fuel your Black Rifle Disease.

As for your question about your barrel, I have scanned all over the DPMS website and have found no Chromoly Vanadium (CMV) barrels. All seem to be 4140 chromoly or 416 stainless. This would lead me to believe that your barrel is not chrome-lined. That and the "chart" states that DPMS rifles are not chrome lined.Sorry I cannot give a more definite answer, as I have never owned a DPMS barrel.

How did you end up with the upper? Did you buy it new or used? Is it factory or built?

The Ace stock looks sharp on the rifle btw. thumb.gif

I have a FrankenAR built on a DPMS lower with the same Ace stock. Added a lighter trigger spring from Tubbs and some KNS anti-walk pins. Use it as the base for my new precision upper and it works great.

DPMS and Ace are both companies making sturdy stuff that just plain work. Given your state restrictions it looks like a great carbine. Also you can do what I did and pick up a precision upper that way that lower can pull double duty. Pop the pins and you can switch from a tactical gun to a tack driver in 60 seconds.

As for the flash hider problem in your state you do have one option that you may not know about. Look at a PWS FSC556. http://www.primaryweapons.com/STORE/PC/vie...amp;idproduct=9

The BATF considers it a compensator and not a flash hider. They have the BATF letter link on that page too.

But it does reduce flash somewhat. Not quite as good as a dedicated flash hider, but something is better than nothing. Awesome compensator too! Worth the money just for that. It's not cheap at $100 but you get your money's worth.

new here too, these things are so addictive i even sleep with her at night.

i cant say anything about dpms as i dont know about there products and have never research and used one first hand. somebody correct me if i am wrong but if the barrel is indeed chrome lined then there is no break in necessary, as for break in of a non-lined barrel i hear it is recommended in order to squeeze out as much accuracy out of the rifle as possible, i dont know if you are gonna get into competition or not but i guess every bit helps.

here is a link to their site with FAQ's and their recommend breaking in procedure.

hey how did you post your pic i am having a hard time tying to do that. nice gun by the way, what type of optics are you looking at...

i got a stag model 2 with a fab. def. quad rail, surefire g2, and a vtac sling you have to look into the vtac sling very good investment and very versatile...

enjoy

oh yeah i found this on their site as well i dont know if it will help...

Are your barrels chrome-lined?
DPMS offers chrome-lined barrels in the following configurations as a factory option:
20" Heavy Barrel
16" Heavy Barrel
16" M4 Contoured Barrel
14.5" M4 Contoured Barrel
11.5" Short Barrel
7" Short Barrel
Cost of this upgrade is $32.95. As a note ALL 14.5", 11.5" and 7" barrels have chrome-lined bores and chambers.

me myself i never broke the barrel, mine is chrome lined so i just shot and shot and shot... after every range trip i dismantle and clean.... when i get a new upper dedicated to more accuracy i will most likely do the breaking in thing

Oops I missed the chrome lined question. Easiest way to tell is look at the chamber. Chrome lined also means chrome lined chamber.

If you are unsure the post a picture up of the chamber view.

If the barrel is chrome lined no break in is necessary. Just shoot and clean it.

If it is unlined then you need to baby the first 100 round. Shoot 5 and then clean the bore. Do this 5 shot pattern until 30 and then switch to units of 10 before each cleaning until you hit a final total of 100. Use a good grade of FMJ ammo during this 100. Federal XM193 is perfect. After the 100 just shoot and clean normally.

To post a picture here....

You don't upload the pictures. You link to them from a hosting site. Photobucket is easy and works great.

As stated above chrome lining is an option on DPMS barrels. I've owned a factory DPMS 14.5" chrome lined barrel upper.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I've been looking around and this looks like a good site with down to earth straight up folks.
I bought the upper and lower complete from here: http://www.rguns.net/rifles/rifles-semiaut...56-16Inch.shtml
Their prices were good and they ship out fast. Not a lot of info on their web site but no problem calling on the phone.

Nice looking rifle you've got there! I've got nothing but good things to say about DPMS. No problems with their products or service. As far as break in procedures, there is a thread going on right now in general discussion forum.

Could you post a link to that thread regarding barrel break in? I couldn't find it.

There was a card that came with the upper from DPMS that stated for best accuracy the chamber and bore should be cleaned after every round
for the first 25 rounds and then every 10 rounds up to 100. Wow! I guess it won't kill me to do that way but wondered if it was overkill.
I looked in the chamber and it looks like machined 41XX (4140), no chrome color. 99.9% sure it is not chrome lined. I may call rguns to double check but
the break in recommendations seems to confirm no chrome.
Hope to get to the range soon to try this rig out. I let you know how it goes. Haven't shot this one yet and I'm already scheming up another riffle, sick.

Thanks CoolSteve. Some interesting reading from the link in post #18. I did run across that information previously and that raised my doubts. Seems the brake in procedure is overkill.

Finally got out to shoot today and broke it in like Zeke recommended. A bore snake was my friend today. The iron sights were surprisingly close and it was pretty easy to move the hits. All the shots were on the target. Had a few jams but I'll blame it on the operator and the fact that the gun is new.
Shot 127 rounds exactly, the last 20 were all fun, knocking over bowling pins, cans and some rapid fire into the berm flea.gif flea.gif flea.gif, had a blast (no pun intended).
Not crazy about the trigger, gritty on the way down, no idea what the pull weight is but not light.
Thinking of sending the trigger to Bill Springfield at www.TriggerWork.net. Heard he does a great job to a stock trigger for a very reasonable price.
Looking forward to getting a scope, target was pretty small at 50 yards with iron sights, gonna get real small at 100 yards wink.gif .
