Well I am going to get back into IDPA it has been a while sence I have competed. Hopefully if everything goes right I will be picking up a new G20 by the end of nextweek. I want to use it for IDPA right know I have no guns that I can use for it. I went to hang out and see how things where going at the local club where IDPA competitions are held. I noticed that nobody picked up there brass untill the end of the shooting. then it seemd like everybody swarmed the range. I never paid any attention to this before i did not reload at the time. Is this normal? I don't want to be loosing my 10mm brass to some unethical individual. Do you guys mark your brass? I am actually thinking about getting a 40 barrel for it but i have to find out if this is lega.

I only shoot IDPA occasionally now and shoot mostly IPSC. But most of the people who reload mark their brass in some way to identify it. Most people seem to be pretty good at seeing that you get back your brass. I've had people return brass to me at the following month's match.

It will vary from club to club. Our matches are advertised as "lost brass" matches because we don't want to slow down the match waiting for people to pick up brass. We also have had shooters creating unsafe situations by not paying attention and starting to wander out into the shooting area while they were intent on picking up brass. But we have NO ONE shooting 10mm in our matches as it is not competitive and no one wants to lose their brass. We occasionally have someone shoot the Classifier with a 10mm, just to see how they do. (OK, it's usually me, and I classify Expert with the 10)

Both ESP and CDP allow barrel and caliber swaps, SSP does not. Personally, I shoot a Witness 10mm with a 40 barrel in ESP often. (These days, though, I mainly shoot a S&W 686 in 357 Mag in ESR! It's fun to watch the SO back off from the muzzle and cylinder blast after the first shot 8^)

You've got to get out of the way for the next shooter. It's definitely a no-no to pick up your brass after you shoot at my club. If you wait till the match is over, you can haul a gallon sized freezer bag FULL of brass out of there. Of course, I always take TWO bags with me.

At our local IPSC matches we have a few people who pick up the brass and dumped mags each time a shooter is done. Never has slowed us down yet. My local indoor matches is where I get my practices in and I have to be able to recoup my brass or I couldnt afford to shoot.

Now outdoor matches are a different story.

My local club is "pick it up as you go". Sometimes I'll pick up while they are scoring my targets. If I've done my job, I know what the hits are already. Generally during scoring, brass pick up is fine. Once scoring and pasting are done, so is picking up brass.

What are the other shooters doing while you are picking up your brass?

Back "in the day" (20 yrs ago) when I shot IPSC we had the shooter that just shot scoring with the RO 9no arguments later), the upcoming shooter taping, & the shooter following him (and sometimes a volunteer) picking brass. It never caused a delay.

Picking up your brass after shooting a stage will most likely be frowned upon/strenuously discouraged. Most clubs seek/need to keep things moving along briskly. One local club has only a three (3) hour center-fire shooting window due to noise restrictions. You really have to hustle to get 20+ shooters through five (5) stages in that time period.

That said, I have seen revolver folks snatch their brass pretty efficiently because of the benefit of the “cylinder dump.”

I have used a G20 in matches myself. I purchased a KKM .40 SW conversion barrel for mine. It’s a lot cheaper to shoot than 10mm and I don’t sweat the brass as much. But, you will have to shoot in ESP instead of SSP. BTW, I’ve experienced absolutely no failures with the KKM barrel conversion. Everything else (magazines, recoil springs) remains the same.

Converting your G20 to .40 is NOT IDPA legal.

My clubs allow (encourage) shooters to pick up brass while others are pasting/scoring. It works well for us.

Converting a G20 to .40 S&W is legal per IDPA rules. You have to shoot the gun in ESP instead of SSP, though.

You are correct. SSP allows barrel replacement of the same configuration and original caliber. Excluded mods include a barrel of another caliber not in the original factory model. ESP and CDP allow replacement of barrels of original configuration and there is no exclusion of other calibers. (pages 20-24 of the 2005 rulebook)

You guys are, of course, correct. I neglected to make mention of ESP in my previous post, and I apologize.

I shoot mainly SSP, and sometimes forget that there are other divisions.

4. Custom Defensive Pistol Division (CDP)
Handguns permitted for use in this division must:
1. Be semi-automatic
2. Be .45 ACP caliber.
etc, etc, etc

So, there IS an exclusion of other calibers for CDP. You can't swap in a .400 Corbon or a .45 GAP barrel in a 1911 and use it for CDP. Any replacement barrel for your glock that isn't available in a caliber available in the original factory model moves you to ESP.

Well, I shoot IDPA at my local club with a G29 and I can be competitive with it.
At this January's classifier I had the 2nd fastest time out of all competitors, divisions and classifications (30+ guys).
I'm more accurate with a G29 than I am with a G20 for some reason.

After I'm done shooting a stage all shooters come out to help tape, they pick up any brass or dropped mags and are waiting there to hand them to me nicely as I exit the stage.
Works great for us.
Everybody gets their brass back.
Doesn't slow us down at all.

RR4406PAK is right, we do have a great bunch of shooters at our club. Things go quite fast, but a great bunch of guys.
We have to fight the volunteers off with a stick. (I still hurt)
