...planning on buying something else.

Not a damn thing wrong with the XD-40. It's just these two things:

1. it's the 'tactical' model with a 5 inch barrel, which is just a bit longer than I want, and

2. the XDm in .40 caliber is not only a half inch shorter, but it also has a 16 round magazine (comes with two).

I'm getting $500 for the old one, so I feel like I'm doing alright.

Anyone heard anything real bad about the newer version, the XDm?

Other than it being an XD, and that it's in .40S&W? Nothing other than those.

Hey Pepper I can see you like the 1911 .45 by your sig pic.

Yeah, that is another option -- I have owned a 1911 (two actually) in the past and I am seriously considering going back in that direction.

I guess I need a little push.

The ultimate compromise! A 1911 in the .40, and one of the best looking 1911's (imo) out there.

PFW, that's a beauty, but if I'm gonna get a 1911 I want it to be a .45 ACP.

No, I think I'll probably stick with my plan to get an XDm in .40 cal... although I do like the Springfield Armory 1911s a lot... decisions descisions...

Get a 10mm, it's what a "foh tay" is supposed to be.

10mm... who makes them? I've only seen Glocks.

Also, isn't the ammo really pricey?

Yes 10mm is pricey. Unlike alot of folks here I like the 40 S&W. Also I might add when I go to the shop all the 9mm is gone I can still buy 40. I have looked at the 10mm and the ballistics are impressive but I can buy a box of 44 mag hunting ammo cheaper than a box of 10 ball ammo its just not worth it to me. YMMV

I do like 1911's, but if I'm going to depend on a gun to save my butt, it's probably going to be a Glock. As (IIRC) BC says, "A 1911 is what you show to your friends. A Glock is what you show to your enemies."

I am a very big fan of the Dan Wesson 1911's, and might even carry mine off duty from time to time, but it's been relegated to more of a BBQ gun status, and it gets trotted out when I want to really look good as far as accuracy. Whenever we have a "game" shoot at the PD, I drag it out and put it to work. When we're actually doing skill building exercises or real training, the Glock goes back on my hip.

I'm not a huge fan of the .40, in fact I've only met one I actually liked. My wife has a Beretta 96 Vertec that is a sweet shooter, and she really likes it. It does it's job, at least until I can drag her over to the dark side, and get her to put a G19 to use.

That's what I thought. If good hunting .44 mag is cheaper than 10mm ball then I can't afford to shoot it. I'm on a budget. I've even considered going down to 9mm, but for a home defense gun I want a little bit more power.

Why not? All the cops I have talked to here really like the .40. They all carry one.

I've owned two G19s. Great little guns. Wish I still had em!

XD's have gotten positive reviews, and many gun awards. My daily carry is my XD, for its reliablity, easy point-n-shoot, and weight.

I personally don't like the XDM..I think it looks like a tonka truck. But if it can hold 16 rounds.. it may be worth buying. Couldn't be that hard to sand/mod the grip...

I have the XDM in 40 and like it. Good shooter, I thought Colt made a 1911 style in 10mm? Now I remember, it's the Delta

Well buddy backed out of the deal, so I guess I'm keeping the XD-40. I think I'll get a light for it, that will be something new. I've been wanting to do that anyway, to make it a night gun for the home.

I have a small house, so I don't need a blazing bright spotlight, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the Streamlight TR-3 Compact. It's less expensive, and smaller, but still puts out 90+ lumens.

I'd suggest the TLR-1 over the -3.

Why get a compact light if you don't have the small gun?

I have a second smaller gun with rail mounts I want to use it on as well. I want to be able to switch it back and forth between them.

You know I think you're right. Get the bigger light. I can get the smaller light too, later, if I want to use the smaller gun as a night gun.
