My chrono is on the fritz so...has anyone here chronographed Hornady's XTP factory loads with the 180g and 200g from a 5" barrel? Might as well toss in the 4.6" Glock barrel too?

Dave

Dave T, sorry I haven't shot factory rounds for quite some time, when I did I didn't have a chrony. I handload my own Hornady 200XTP's about 1180-1200fps from the S&W 1006 5.00" barrel, 1135-1155fps from the S&W 1076 4.25" barrel, about 1120-1140fps from the G-29 3.78" barrel.

Here is what Hornady list for their ammo...

Advertised velocity for Hornady 200XTP is 1050fps 5.00" https://www.hornady.com/shop/?page=ballisti...roduct_sku=9129

Advertised velocity for Hornady 180XTP is 1180fps 5.00" https://www.hornady.com/shop/?page=ballisti...roduct_sku=9126

Advertised velocity for Hornady 155XTP is 1265fps 5.00" https://www.hornady.com/shop/?page=ballisti...roduct_sku=9122

Shadow, thanks for posting that but you will probably understand that I don't entirely trust the ammo makers published reports. I have seldom chronographed a factory round that did as well as the maker claimed. Hornady is pretty good ammo but I'd rather see an independent report. If I can get the old Oehler 33 working I'll post my own results here.

My carry load right now for my 20SF is the Hornady 200 XTP, I will have to run my chrono when I can, but don't have it right now.

Dave, I too have seen discrepancies’ in the data as well! I posted the data as a starting point of what to look for, send me some ammo and I'll chrono it for you! really.gif thumb.gif

I don't have data on Hornady factory ammo, but what I have, for anyone who's interested, is my chrono data for a 50 shot string of Double Tap, loaded with the 200 grain Hornady XTP projectile.

The gun was a G20 with the Genuine Glock 6" hunting Barrel & a 20lb Recoil Spring on a Stainless Steel Rod.
Temperature was about 95 degrees F.
Not sure on barometer reading, but it was the kind of good weather day where the pressure was probably about 30.0 to 30.5" hg at sea level, and I was shooting at a range where elevation was about 3700 feet MSL, so my local pressure was lower.

Individual Shot velocities:

1073 – 1135 – 1123 – 1118 – 1119 – 1110 – 1119 – 1083 – 1119 – 1106 – 1125 – 1113 – 1121 – 1113 – 1137 – 1111 – 1126 – 1131 – 1140 – 1129 – 1122 – 1129 – 1150 – 1118 – 1134 – 1135 – 1139 – 1114 – 1132 – 1128 – 1121 – 1128 – 1109 – 1127 – 1115 – 1154 – 1130 – 1131 – 1137 – 1137 – 1106 – 1111 – 1130 – 1128 – 1135 – 1117 – 1125 – 1126 – 1107 – 1116

High = 1154
Low = 1073
Average = 1122
Extreme Spread = 81
Standard Deviation = 14

I never tested this round with the short Glock Barrel.
The disturbingly wide extreme spread I have found to be typical of many Double Tap loads.
Double Tap claims 1250 FPS for this load from a G20 without specifying barrel length, so I assume they mean the short barrel. It should also be noted that the same chrono on the same day, measured El Cheapo Aluminum Case CCI Blazer target ammo with 200 grain FMJ's at an average of 1082 FPS from the 6" barrel, and with an extreme spread of only 25 FPS...... sad.gif ...... So much for expensive ammo being all that much hotter huh?

Velocities with the 6" barrel that are about 150 FPS slower than what Double Tap claims with the short barrel is also something I'm finding typical of almost all DT ammo. In one case - the DT 155 grain Barnes XPB load - actual velocity was 250 FPS slower than claimed.

Thanks for the information Brian. You provide an interesting data point to add to my never ending search for knowledge (smile).

I think I'm going to have to order a new Skyscreen for the Oehler but when I do I too will do some chrono tests and report the results.

Brian,

Thanks for posting this information.

I am particularly distressed by your assertion that the Barnes XPB load was 250 fps slower than claimed especially since Corbon markets their DPX at 200 fps slower than DoubleTap. The DT Barnes XPB is my "round of choice" for general SD purposes. I also happen to have some Corbon DPX. I have certain perceptions as to how these rounds "feel" when shot but that doesn't tell me anything definitive.

I've come to the conclusion that not only will I now have to run my own tests with this ammo but I will also send some out to be "professionally tested" so that I can see for myself what I might be staking my life on.

So can handloading exceed the performance of Doubletap ammo?

i have tested my handloaded 200gr XTP's out of my G-20 with LW standard barrel to about 1100-1150 or so, just could not get 1200 out of it. I do not have the data in front of me so i cannot quote it.

I am still searching for "the load" for the 200 grainers, that will put it out at an honest 1200 or at least very close to it..though all things considered, 1150 is not shabby.

I like the XTP's in a handgun, they do the job. I have recovered a few from animals, and the penetrate and expand, good tough bullet.
