Anyone have a good source for 6.8 ammo? I agree it could be harder to get and I have some cash today to stock up on ammo with. What is the best source with available quantities? unsure.gif

I use 140 grain Noslers and Sierras and 144 Lapuas in my 6.5 Grendel, 26 per magazine. That's why I think it's popular.

I don't understand the 6.5 Grendel popularity

With greater production capabilities and numbers than Alexander Arms, Olympic produces a 243WSSM that ballistically put the Grendel to shame with a lot more versatility with bullet weights from 55 grain up to 115. Proven and repeatable velocities and only the bolt is propietary to Olympic.

The 6.8SPC I understand. More short range power.

My choice for shorter range engagements was the 6x45
(223 case shooting a 6mm bullet)
Which gave me greater energy/ velocity and range.

My long range is the 243 WSSM

I have the 6.5 Grendel and ammo is available for it. You won't find it on the shelf at Walmart but you can't find any ammo on the shelf at Walmart nowadays. Does that mean that the caliber we chose (357 mag, 40 S&W, 30-06...) is not a good choice and you shouldn't get it...No of course not. You can get 6.5 ammo from AA, Cabelas or other sources on the net. For plinking, the Wolf Gold (brass case) ammo is pretty cheap by todays standards so it's pretty economical at $14.99 a box (20) to use when compared to equivalent 223 ammo from Wolf Gold at $12.99 a box (20). I chose the 6.5 over the 6.8 for the same reasons already mentioned. Overall, it does just as good as the 6.8 at short range but also excels at long ranges unlike the 6.8...

It seems the Grendel is surging in popularity right now. For some reason 6.8 has stalled around here.

Well, I had a big write up last week but lost it when I hit add reply. The 6.8 SPC and the 6.5G are both really good at what the are designed for. I like the 6.5G for the overall capabilities it has. Call me crazy but I like the ability to have an excellent CQB weapon that can be called on to reach out when needed. I also like the idea of having 1 cartridge that CAN be used in a 14.5, 18 or 24 inch package for short or long range work. Grab a loaded mag and grab whichever weapon package you need (or want) and you're good to go. I see all these posts of I have this caliber for this range and this caliber for that range...etc..etc. That's great until you have to carry all these weapons and ammo on foot in a real world situation (you know....The Zombies Are Coming!!!) It reminds me of Robin Williams in "The Survivors" when he brings all these guns to a gunfight and calls time out because he grabbed the wrong ammo.

I saw something about the .243 WSSM being more versatile than the 6.5G. It is an excellent performer ballistically but as for versatility, it is limited by magazine capacity due to the huge cartridge case diameter making it a single stack low capacity package.

Now I know the Grendel is not the magic cartridge that will obsolete every other cartridge. It's not the BEST thing out there for any given situation or any given distance. But it is one of the best at handling many or all of them satisfactorily from the standard AR-15/M-16 package. With a quick change from my Eotech to my 4-16x (both in Larue QD mounts) my 14.5 Tactical is cabable from point blank to 800m (supersonic and over 500 energy.) It easily fills that "If you could only have one gun" type role.

Medic...out!
Great synopsis, thanks for the research.
