This is my story of last night. How bout some more from yall Last night aroud 0330 We gat a call for asthma as we got on scene mom says hes not breathing!! ( how many times have we seen that and they are just being stupid) Well my Lt comes out of the house holding a limp kid in his arms ( that is realy not breathing). We work our cowboy medic skills, a BVM and some drugs fixed the day. By the time we get to the hospital the kid is talking about some of his frineds. That has to be one of the best fellings ever.

I'll get back to this when the kid and wife are sleeping and I have time to type, Rampy probably has some good ones too. When you say "good" are you talking about good outcomes or interesting (You don't see that everyday) calls? I have both, but don't want to bum anybody out as not all of the interesting stuff is cheery.

It sucks having a guy die on your cot as you work him & his wife less than 3 feet away without a scratch on her holding his hand as he died.....

QUOTE (trifire @ August 28th 2009 10:54 PM) By good i mean interesting . Any story that involes carnige, or life saving, good out comes or bad, what ever you want to tell. OK, I will do my best not to violate HIPPA. Several years back we had semi rear end a mini-van with 5 people in it. The semi driver fell alseep and hit the van which was stopped due to another accident that had occurred earlier. The truck driver was not injured seriously but all 5 in the van were hurt badly. The rear of the van was crushed to the point the rear bumper was at the point where the middle row seats should have been, the parents in the front seat were both unconcious from the triple hit they took, once from the rear, once from the front and again from the rear. We got helicopters in the air right away. The 2 kids in the middle seat were a bloody mess. The one had a compound fracture of the femur and the other had serious facial lacerations from her portable DVD player. Everyone was wearing their seat belts. We started working on the van, trying to cut it away from them but it was tough going. It took several minutes to get in to the point where we could even gain access to anyone. We got the first one cut out in about 15 minutes and the second a few minutes after. All told it took us 40 minutes to get them all out. The kid with the femur fracture kept calling a girls name the whole time everyone assumed it was the girl with the DVD player wounds. It wasn't. Up to this point we assumed we only had 4 patients, we assumed wrong. The 5th patient was a young girl. At the time of the accident she was in the rear of the van not the rear seats but between the rear seats and the back hatch. We found her at the 1 hour mark when one of the guys was picking up tools and it took another 40 minutes to get her out. What was amazing was she was the least injured of the 5. She was knocked unconcious at the impact and the van crumpled around her leaving her largely untouched. It was the most amazing thing.

That is amazing. I have heard of that happing to another crew here. It was a car this time. The driver was ejected, front seat passenger DOA, and no other apparent vics. The back seat had folded over to where all you could see was the back of the seat. Appeantly many people walked by the car and looked in to see the reckage and assess the vehicle. Appx 40 min later as they were cleaning up the scene some one saw a small arm poke out from a small crack under the seat. Just like your story small kid with only a few injuries. It is amazing how resilant and flexable small kids are.

Today, a friggin medical miracle. Had a 10-50, pickup vs semi. Pickup driver is 74 YO and in great shape, he was out of the vehicle, his color was gray. Got the full treatment and sent to ER. ER Doc does his thing CT and X-rays, tries to get a helicopter to take him to trauma center, no dice, the fog that caused the accident grounded the choppers. Transferred by ground to trauma center for a suspected torn Aorta. Gets to trauma center and they do their thing and decide he needs surgery to repair the tear. Surgeon looks, says there is no way he will survive the surgery, is suprised he has made it this long. Family is called, priest is called, goodbyes said, last rites given. Goes into surgery, Doc finds his descending aorta is separated, completely detached an inch below the branch. Aorta is repaired and reinforced with an implant. Old man survives surgery and wakes up. Still a chance he won't make it, may have lost blood flow to vital organs for too long. Waiting to see if his kidneys still work among other things. Not to drag the thread into politics, but I am sure there are some people that are very happy some bean counter wasn't there to say, "Nope, sorry, costs too much. And besides he has lived long enough and has maybe 2 or 3 years left, if that."

I was an EMT here in Pa back in the early 90's. One night we get a 302 call. Go to the house, wife ate a bottle of pills and drank a fifth of vodka. Given all that she's pretty lucid. We get her in the rig and were driving to the ER with one of our police officers in the back with me. I'm trying to keep her talking and taking vitals. About mid-way through the trip, she notices the officer sitting at the back of the rig and starts saying " Hey there, your pretty cute!" Just as she was going on about how much she'd like to go have a drink with him, she sits up and projectile vomits all over the poor guy! He just got on shift and now he's covered in some of the nastiest smelling puke.
So we get her to the ER which was also our local psychiatric ward, get her checked in. I'm out in the ER parking lot hosing out the back of the rig when another of our officers pulls up with the husband cuffed in the back. Husband is happier than anything so I ask the officer what's going on. Well while were in route, the husband grabbed the empty bottle of pills and vodka, headed down to our local convenience store, and sat in the parking lot with a knife threatening to kill himself. So the officer hooks the guy up, and brings him to the ER too. I asked the husband "Hey man, you alright?". He was fine when we were there earlier. He says to me " I got lonely after you took her, so I figure if I get committed too, we can be together!". I didn't have the heart to tell hm that they keep the men separate form the women in the ward for the length of their stay.

Had all of 2 calls medical yesterday in a 8 hour shift & both of em were borderline BLS & could have gone either way, but since we had a paramedic student the calls were ALS.. The local Psych ward is coed, but if a husband/wife, boyfriend/boyfriend or girlfriend/girlfriend are visiting the other person goes to either another unit or in the main hospital till after one person has been discharged or sent elsewhere.... And yes, they have had boyfriend/boyfriend in the unit, one guy get's drunk & takes pills and then the other guy is lonely, get's even drunker and takes more pills so they can be togeather......Then they get really pissed off they are separated....... Don't forget about the matches made in the psych ward, that's another topic entirely........

This one isn't "good", but I find it hilarious. BTW if you are squeamish or offended easily just move past this post.
I was stationed at NAVSTA Great Lakes, and we shared our channel with EMS and Fire. The Navy's only bootcamp... Anyway, I heard a call over the radio "dispatch, this is district 6, we need an EMS to this location. Two male recruits are in the compartment, one is bleeding profusely from the anus..." I bout died from laughing, the way it was worded with the thought of "welp, there goes don't ask don't tell..." I never did hear what happened to those two, but I bet they weren't happy!

Vodkaknight, had a call one night for "stomach pain" by a dispatcher who could not keep from ROTFLHAO over the radio.....
Called the dispatcher, but she would not say shat, just kept laughing her ass off.....
Pulled up in front of the house, was a male in his early 20's standing in front of the house with a small bag...
He walked to the ambulance & said he needed a rid, could not sit down and had really bad pains in his lower abdomen.
He climbed in, laid on his back after being informed he could not lay on his stomach....
Took a stethoscope and tried listening to bowel sounds..
Was this strange buzzzzzzzzing sound......
Seems he had a vibrator shoved up his backside so far they needed to operate to get it out.....

LOL that's pretty messed up, reminded me of this time somebody on quarterdeck watch put a Snapple bottle in his bum, thick end first and it broke. His wife said he did it a lot, and she was suprised it broke. Still, I don't think I could meet that guy without laughing at his face, vibrator so far up he couldn't crap it out LOL.

I picked up this guy yesterday, As soon i got out of the bus the guy gave me a Eat Shiv and Die look i figure this is going to get intersting. he was c/o chest pain. I get him in the back of the bus and he practicly unleashes every cus word in the book at me, gets up and allmost tries to hit me. Long story short i yelld back and he was, not so kindly, asked to get the **** out of my truck. he ended up walking away after i called for the boys in blue. Just another typical day in my district.
