I have a 1,000 Fed Small Rifles so tonight, due to this thread, I tried them out.

What I did was decap and swage as normal, then used my neck deburring tool to deburr the pocket hole, angling to get any extra heavy crimp burr left. This leaves a slight champher which is good for starting the primer. I then used a clean/resizer to clean the shavings out and uniform the hole.

Made the Feds feed about like CCI when just doing a swage. With CCI, the CCI fed like it was new brass.

Its a bit more work but doable.

This is a new one. Most "b*****" are about Federal Brass, not Federal Primers.

FWIW, Last month I loaded several thousand Mil-Crimped cases (I get them by the thousand from a local range) with Federal Small Rifle Primers. Not a single problem with any of the cases. They were mixed FC's, PMC's, LC-08's, and a few WCC's. All were swaged on a dillon super swage.

BTW, before I stopped using my RCBS Swaging tool I had issues with just about all primers. Even with a Rock Crusher the tool didn't finish the job of swaging as it didn't leave a radiused edge on the primer pocket mouth.

With primers in "shortage state" today I load whatever I can get my hands on, even federals.

Used 100 of the federal primers last night without a problem. I used a reaming tool on a drill.

I've got a power station and I love it. It saves a lot of time.

I solved the problem and swapped the Fed's with CCI at the store I bought em from. Seems like most of the RCBS swage die have problems with it. I have used mine for thousands of pockets and had no problems, other than with the slightly larger Fed primers.

No problems for me with the RCBS swager dies and Federal 205's. I have done about 1000 or so with only but a few issues. the brass is mixed military crimped. Some brands are easier to prime than others but it has worked just fine for me. I have tried using the deburring tool to chamfer the primer pocket a bit but it hasn't seemed to make much difference. For $25.55 a case I will cont. to buy all the Federals I can get my hands on.

I've been loading Rem 6 1/2 and 7 1/2 primers in my 223 brass for years. If the Remingtons are not available I use Winchester. I have had zero problems using either on brass that I have decrimped. I use CCI's for fireforming purposes. Of course the CCI's I have on the shelf are 25 years old. (I don't fire form that much) I use the REM BR's for my high intensity cartidges like the 204 and 20 Tactical. Regular Remington 6 1/2's carry the mail for everything else.

I do use Federal primers in my PPC loads if available as they are softer and many PPC pistols are very problematic for light primer ignition. I have never used Federals on 223 cases. On the six progresieves presses I use I have found that the Winchesters or Remingtons will run through the primer feed fine.

I use a Dillon Swager on my bench to prep the pockets. For my non-crimped rounds I will uniform them just for something to do. I have seen minimal much benefit in uniforming in my AR's but I do see it in the varmint rifles I use.

I uniform the non-crimped ones in my rilfes that I am going for pure accuracy. The seating of the primer is not enhanced from the uniforming. It merely squares up the bottom of the pockets for cosistent primer crush. Most of the crimped stuff is used in IPSC matches where if you can hold 6 inches at 300 you are in the money. My rifles are in the money even with the decrimping only. Also on my IPSC matches it is most often a lost brass match and I hate putting all the effort in to the prep when the usual steps do the job.

I must confess though that when I work up loads for a rifle I will do everything I can to COMMERCIAL brass to get a baseline for potential of the rifle. MY wifes 6X45 AR with a Shilen custom barrel will shoot into about 0.4 to 0.5 MOA with preped WW cases. With decrimped LC stuff it will do 0.6 to 0.7 MOA. My wife can't shoot that in a run and gun, nor can I!1 LOL, so we use the milspec stuff for matches and when I use it on PD's I drag out the preped Winchester so I can have it all. Picking up one or two pieces of the prepped stuff is easy at the rate we shoot PD's here in AZ.

Good to know. I have 1k of Federal large pistol but all my small rifle are Remington, CCI and some PMC. Anymore you have to jump on whats there or the next person in line will!!

Federal primers range from .002 - .007 larger in diameter than most other companies primers. If you use Federal primers with Federal brass, you'll generally be ok. Where the problem comes in is when people use other companies primers with Federal brass and then the primers fall out, often resulting in either the ammo being mislabeled as 'over pressure' or the brass as being over used. The fact is that the non-Federal primers are undersized in the Federal brass. This also contributes to the rumor that federal brass is inherently softer than all other brass.
